K-State, Nakashima Take Home Powercat Invitational Titles

MANHATTAN, Kan. – With three players occupying the top three spots on the individual leaderboard and all five members of the scoring lineup netting top-20 finishes, the Kansas State women's golf team earned a wire-to-wire victory to conclude the fall season at the Powercat Invitational following Tuesday's final round at the par-72, 6,342-yard Colbert Hills Golf Club.

K-State won the event for a second-straight season, earning a 27-shot victory over second-place Cincinnati at 13-over par 877. The Wildcats put the finishing touches on a second-round score of 12-over par 300 to begin the morning before a final-round total of 5-over par 293.

Sophomore Nanami Nakashima earned her first collegiate victory at 5-under par 211 as she was the only competitor in the 88-player field to finish under par. Senior Noa van Beek picked up a runner-up finish – her best collegiate placing – at even-par 216, while sophomore Kelsey Chen took third place at 7-over par 223.

"Mission completed," said third-year head coach Stew Burke, who saw each one of the five members of the scoring lineup earn career-best finishes. "We are delighted to defend Colbert Hills and go back-to-back in our home tournament in such emphatic fashion. The ladies did an incredible job all week. I can't even begin to describe how difficult the golf course played with the high winds. We set the course up tough because we wanted to end the fall with a great idea of what we need to improve upon and work on those areas over the offseason to be ready for the spring."

It was the fourth team title for the Wildcats in Burke's two-plus seasons as head coach in addition to the eighth individual championship in his tenure.

Nakashima, a sophomore from Kani, Japan, collected the second top-five finish of her career, the other being last year's Powercat Invitational when she finished in second place. It was the fifth time in her career – including the third time in five tournaments this fall – that she finished under par for a 54-hole event.

"I am really delighted for Nanami to get her first college win – especially being the only player under par over three days – and how she handled herself in the final round, especially coming down the stretch," Burke said.

Nakashima came out on fire on Tuesday morning as she went bogey free and 1-under par over her first 13 holes amidst windy conditions. After a bogey on No. 14, she came back with consecutive birdies on Nos. 15 and 16 en route to her second under-par round of the event and seventh of the fall season.

A native of Oene, Netherlands, van Beek has tallied a career-best finish in each of the last three events as she tied for sixth place at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational and fourth place at the OU Intercollegiate before this week's runner-up finish. She put the finishing touches on a 2-under par second round on Tuesday morning – playing the last two holes from the day prior that were suspended by darkness – before a final-round tally of 3-over par 75.

Chen bettered her career-best finish of a sixth-place showing at last year's Puerto Rico Classic while playing for Georgia Southern. The Dalian, China, native tallied three birdies in the final round, each coming on the back 9.

Freshman Keen Visavapattamawan posted her fourth top-20 finish in her first five events as she finished in 11th place at 12-over par 228. She bettered her tie for 13th place at the OU Intercollegiate. Another freshman, Casey Kang, tied for 16th place in her third collegiate event at 16-over par 232, a nine-spot improvement from the OU Intercollegiate.

The three Wildcats playing as individuals – freshman Stalee Fields and juniors Julia Ballester Barrio and Alenka Navarro – produced top-30 finishes. Fields, a native of Fort Worth, Texas, tied for 18th place at 17-over par 233, topping a tie for 28th she recorded at the Schooner Fall Classic. Ballester Barrio finished at 19-over par 235 to tie for 23rd place, three shots ahead of Navarro, who tied for 29th place.

"These ladies have truly earned some time off," Burke said. "I am looking forward to meeting with them all individually to break down the season and put our blueprint in place so we can start the spring hot and make a postseason push."

Kansas State is back in action February 1-3 when the Wildcats compete in the Puerto Rico Classic held at The Grande Reserve in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.
