Apr 26, 2019 | Track & Field
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.– Competing on day one of the National Relay Championships at John McDonnell Field in Fayetteville, Arkansas, the Kansas State men's and women's track and field teams registered several top performances, including the fastest women's sprint medley relay time in school history and the second-fastest women's 200 meters in school history on Friday.
The sprint medley relay made up of two-200-meter legs, a 400 and an 800, the women's relay team of Taishia Pryce, Asha Cave, Akia Guerrier and Kassidy Johnson, finished second overall in 3:46.76, which is the fastest sprint medley relay time in school history. The Wildcats eclipsed the time of 3:53.89 set earlier this year at the Texas Relays.
In addition to the fastest women's sprint medley relay in school history, the Wildcats set three more K-State top-10 marks on Friday.
In the women's 200 meters, this week's Big 12 Athlete of the Week, senior Ranae McKenzie ran the second-fastest time in school history, running a 23.14 to place sixth overall. McKenzie's time is second behind only A'Keyla Mitchell's 22.94 set in 2016.
Earlier in the women's 800 meters, redshirt freshman Alex Ferguson cracked the K-State top-10 in the women's 800 meters, where she ran a 2:06.67 to place fifth overall, while sophomore Cayli Hume placed 10th, running a 2:10.27. With Ferguson's time of 2:06.67, the Wildcats hold two of the top-six 800-meter times in the Big 12 this season, with Johnson holding the top-time of 2:04.45.
Setting a personal best in the women's 400-meter hurdles, freshman Lavaun Stephenson also clocked the eighth-fastest time in K-State outdoor history in the event, running a 58.91 to place third overall. Stephenson's time breaks her personal best of 1:00.90 set at last week's Michael Johnson Invitational, as K-State now holds three of the top-five 400-meter hurdle times in the Big 12.
The Wildcats got their sole victory on day one in the women's discus, where junior Ashley Petr won the event by throwing 53.83m/176-07 on her fourth attempt.
K-State will return to action at the second-annual National Relay Championships on Saturday, beginning at 10:00 a.m. CT with the women's high jump. The Wildcats will compete on the track in relay events on Saturday, with the 4x100 meter relay kicking off at 10:02 a.m.
