Ingvaldsen Wins Hammer Throw Title on Day One of Big 12 Championship

NORMAN, Okla. – Junior Helene Ingvaldsen won her first-career Big 12 Outdoor title in the women's hammer throw on Friday, throwing 60.41m/198-02.50 to win the event on day one of the Big 12 Outdoor Championship at John Jacobs Track and Field Complex in Norman, Oklahoma.
Ingvaldsen's title is the sixth in the last seven years in the women's hammer throw, including the 11th in Big 12 history. Along with Ingvaldsen's first-place finish, the Wildcats tallied 25 points in the event, the second-straight year scoring 20 or more points in the event.
"We wanted to score as many points as we could and it was good to get everyone on the podium," Ingvaldsen said of the hammer throw competition. "I wanted to throw over 60 meters and I was happy I was able to do that a few times."
Ingvaldsen took the lead on her first attempt, before throwing the winning mark of 60.41m/198-02.50 on her second attempt. Sophomore Shaelyn Ward came in as the runner-up in the event, throwing 57.95m/190-01 on her first attempt, while sophomore Taylor Latimer placed fourth (53.96m/177-00) and Ashley Petr placed seventh (51.95m/170-05).
In the men's 10,000 meters, sophomore Ethan Powell made history on Friday evening, running the fifth-fastest 10,000 meter time in K-State outdoor history. Powell ran a controlled race that led to a sixth-place finish in 29:55.00, which was the fastest K-State men's 10k time since 2005.
Friday also marked the start of the combined events, as the Wildcats positioned themselves into scoring position for day two.
In the women's heptathlon, the Wildcats took the top-three spots in the women's heptathlon high jump, as senior Morgan Coffman and junior Lauren Taubert each cleared 1.73m/5-08 to earn 891 points, while junior Ariel Okorie placed second with a clearance of 1.67m/5-05.75.
Later in the day in the women's heptathlon 200 meters, Taubert and the Wildcats looked to close out competition on a high note in the women's 200 meters. Taubert ran the fastest time in the event to place first in 24.35, while Okorie came in fourth in 25.31. Through day one of competition, Taubert stands in second place with 3,449 points, just 33 points behind the leader Ashton Zamzow of Texas. Okorie enters day two on Saturday with 3,204 points in fourth, while Coffman is placed in sixth with 3,121 points.
In the men's decathlon, the Wildcats set a series of personal bests on Friday, including four set by senior Simone Fassina, who stands in third with 3,930 points through day one.
All four K-State decathletes launched personal bests in the decathlon shot put, led by Fassina who tossed 14.25m/46-09 to win the event. Junior Aaron Booth recorded a throw of 13.55m/44-05.50 to place fifth and set a personal best in the event.
In the decathlon high jump, Fassina and senior Max Estill each jumped a significant personal best of 1.98m/6-06 to place second overall in the event. Entering the weekend, Fassina's personal best in the high jump stood at 1.94m/6-04.25, while Estill previously held a personal best of 1.93m/6-04.
The Wildcats also placed two individuals on the podium in the men's javelin throw, including Logan Wolfley's throw of 58.95m/193-05, which placed him fourth overall. After wrapping up Friday's decathlon, Fassina recorded a throw of 55.11m/180-10 in the javelin, which was good for eighth overall.
The Wildcats will pick back up on Saturday at the Big 12 Outdoor Championship, with the continuation of the men's decathlon and women's heptathlon. 10 individuals will be crowned champion on Saturday, including the combined events, men's high jump, women's long jump, men's shot put, women's pole vault, men's long jump and men's and women's 3,000-meter steeplechase.
