
K-State Tallies 27 on Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team

MANHATTAN, Kansas – Kansas State student-athletes continued to receive honors and accolades for their hard work in the classroom, as 27 Wildcats were named to the 2018-19 Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team in an announcement by the conference office on Thursday.
In the seven years of the award's existence, K-State has placed 195 student-athletes on the list.
The Wildcats had six student-athletes earn the honor with a perfect 4.0 grade point average. The six recipients with 4.0 GPAs were: Vitoria Alves (track and field), Taylor Gardner (soccer), Ellie Hahn (rowing), Parker McCafferty (track and field), Kate Odgers (rowing) and Maguire Sullivan (soccer).
The remaining honorees for the Wildcats on the 2018-19 Big 12 Academic All-Rookie Team are: Briony Bayles (women's golf), Delaney Bird (rowing), Blake Burrows (baseball), Megan Chrisco (rowing), Emily Crain (soccer), Mason Crews (baseball), Kerby Depenbusch (track and field), Chloe Fisher (soccer), Heather Fortushniak (women's golf), Ioana Gheorghita (tennis), Kaitlyn Henke (rowing), Antoni Hoyte-Small (track and field), David Lutgen (track and field), Laura Macke (women's basketball), Joey Martin (baseball), Charlie Parrish (track and field), Dylan Phillips (baseball), Cooper Schroeder (track and field), Lavaun Stephenson (track and field), Jordan Wicks (baseball) and Shaun Williams (men's basketball)
Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services, student-athletes on the Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team must be new, first-time/incoming freshmen that have completed 24 semester hours of non-remedial coursework and achieved a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00.
Additionally, the student-athlete must have participated in at least one of their team's scheduled contests and must have been a member of their respective team for their sport's entire NCAA Championship segment. The Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team as introduced in the 2012-13 academic year.
K-State, a Tier 1 Carnegie Foundation Institution, has had another outstanding academic year in 2018-19. The Wildcats saw 85 student-athletes receive their diplomas during in 2018-19.
To date K-State student-athletes have been recognized with the following honors: 130 Academic All-Big 12 recipients which includes record numbers for football, soccer and volleyball. Football's Dalton Risner was named a finalist for the Campbell Trophy, the Wuerffel Trophy and the Senior CLASS Award while also earning the Allstate/American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Good Works Team.
In addition, football's Adam Holtorf and Reuter were named to the Google Cloud Academic All-America First Team as selected by CoSIDA, while women's basketball's Peyton Williams and track and field's Morgan Coffman were named to the Google Cloud Academic All-District VII team by CoSIDA. Williams collected the Big 12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year for women's basketball.
K-State also had 10 student-athletes earn the ninth annual Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement Award, which is the Big 12 Conference's highest academic honor.
Kansas State also had a total of 234 K-State student-athletes named to the Fall 2018 Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll. The 234 student-athletes to earn the honor marked the 19th straight semester K-State has placed 200 or more student-athletes on the honor roll.
Of the 234 K-State student-athletes earning the citation for their academic excellence, 43 registered a GPA of 4.0 in the fall semester. K-State ranks among the league's best in terms of academic success as it continues to set a national standard in terms of APR, as all programs are currently well above the required NCAA standard.
