
Coffman and Reuter Named Gautt Scholarship Recipients

MANHATTAN, Kansas – Kansas State's Morgan Coffman (track & field) and Zach Reuter (football) were two of the 20 student-athletes selected by the Big 12 Conference to receive the 2017-18 Dr. Prentice Gautt Postgraduate Scholarships, announced by the league office this afternoon.
Coffman, a 2019 Google Cloud Academic All-District VII First Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), is a management and life sciences major with a 4.0 grade point average.
Coffman, a combined events athlete from Vassar, Kansas, is a three-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team selection and is a two-time United State Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic Team. She was recognized in 2018 by the Big 12 Conference with the Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement Award.
Reuter was a 2019 Google Cloud Academic All-America First Team member as selected by CoSIDA. A wide receiver from Columbia, Missouri, is a biochemistry/pre-med major with a 4.0 grade point average and is a three-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team recipient.
The scholarships are named in honor of the late Dr. Prentice Gautt, a former Big 12 Conference staff member and student services' pioneer who passed away in March 2005. The list of all-time recipients has grown to 381 since the inception of the league in 1996-97. Starting in 2002-03, additional funding increased scholarship award winners to two per member institution.
To date the Big 12 has provided over $3.3 million for postgraduate education. The individual grants began at $2,500 in 1996-97, were raised to $5,000 in 1999 and increased to $6,900 for 2004-05. The awards climbed to $7,500 in 2006-07, moved to $9,000 in 2011-12 and are now at $10,000 since 2013-14.
Criteria for the awards includes a cumulative grade point average of 3.200 on a 4.000 scale, participation in at least two years of intercollegiate athletics at the nominee's respective institution and completion of athletics' eligibility. The student-athletes also must graduate from their respective member institutions within 15 months of their selection for a postgraduate scholarship and are expected to enroll in graduate/professional schools within two years of graduation. Three faculty representatives, one senior woman administrator and one director of athletics form the selection panel for the awards.
K-State, a Tier 1 Carnegie Foundation Institution, has had another outstanding academic year in 2017-18. In addition to 49 graduates this spring, the Wildcats saw 31 student-athletes receive their diplomas in December of 2017.
To date K-State student-athletes have been recognized with the following honors: 130 Academic All-Big 12 recipients which includes record numbers for football, soccer and volleyball. Football's Dalton Risner was named a finalist for the Campbell Trophy, the Wuerffel Trophy and the Senior CLASS Award while also earning the Allstate/American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Good Works Team.
In addition, football's Adam Holtorf and Reuter were named to the Google Cloud Academic All-America First Team as selected by CoSIDA, while women's basketball's Peyton Williams and track and field's Coffman were named to the Google Cloud Academic All-District VII team by CoSIDA. Williams collected the Big 12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year for women's basketball.
K-State also had 10 student-athletes earn the ninth annual Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement Award, which is the Big 12 Conference's highest academic honor.
Kansas State also had a total of 234 K-State student-athletes named to the Fall 2018 Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll. The 234 student-athletes to earn the honor marked the 19th straight semester K-State has placed 200 or more student-athletes on the honor roll.
Of the 234 K-State student-athletes earning the citation for their academic excellence, 43 registered a GPA of 4.0 in the fall semester. K-State ranks among the league's best in terms of academic success as it continues to set a national standard in terms of APR, as all programs are currently well above the required NCAA standard.
