LIMA, Peru – Former Kansas State distance standout Laura Galvan won the gold medal in the women's 5,000 meters earlier today (August 9) at the 2019 Pan American Games at Athletics Stadium.
Competing for her home country of Mexico, Galvan finished the race with a time of 15:35.47 to claim first place in a tight race ahead of Canada's Jessica O'Connell (15:36.08) and American Kimberley Conley (15:36.95). The gold medal was her third of the 2019 season in the event after first-place finishes at Texas Relays (16:15.28) in Austin, Texas on March 28 and the Mexican Championships (16:24.54) in Chihuahua on June 2.
It was Galvan's second-best time of the season in the 5,000 meters, following her time of 15:27.26 to place seventh at the Sunset Tour in Azusa, California on July 9.
One of the top distance runners in school history, Galvan advanced to the NCAA Cross Country Championships twice (2012, 2014) as an undergraduate at K-State. She also finished in the Top 15 at the Big 12 Cross Country Championship on three occasions (2012, 2013, 2014), earning All-Big 12 honors in each season.
Galvan is the second former Wildcat to medal at the Pan Am Games following Kim Williamson, who earned the bronze medal in the women's high jump on Thursday.
