CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Kansas State moved up three spots on the leaderboard following the second round of the Golfweek Conference Challenge at the Par 72, 7,086 yards Cedar Rapids Country Club.
Seniors Jacob Eklund and Ben Fernandez as well as junior Kyle Vance paced the Wildcats. The trio shot 1-over par 72. Eklund is tied for 19th at even-par 144, Vance's 3-over par 147 is tied for 33rd, and Fernandez is one stroke behind Vance and tied for 38th. Freshman Riccardo Leo, who is competing as an individual, tallied 2-over par 74 in round two, and is tied for 33rd with Vance in his first tournament as a Wildcat. Sophomore Will Hopkins carded a 6-over par 78 today, and heads into Tuesday's final round at 10-over par 154, while redshirt freshman teammate Jared Strathe is two strokes behind Hopkins and in 87th.
"It was a tough day and even though the score didn't show it there were some positives we can build on," head coach Grant Robbins said. "There was no quit in this group. We got off to a poor start but the guys kept fighting and were able to play the last 9 holes under par. We have some inexperience in the lineup this week and sometimes you have to go through some adversity in order to grow and develop. We have a good team and I expect us to come out and put together a strong finish tomorrow and get some momentum for the rest of the fall."
Illinois State's David Perkins sits on top the leaderboard following day two after an impressive 5-under par 67 put him at 9-under par 135 for the tournament. Ball State continued to dominate during round two, as their 16-under par 560 gives them an eleven-stroke lead headed into Tuesday's final round.
The third and final round of the Golfweek Conference Challenge begins at 9:00 a.m. Tuesday.
