Wildcats Slump in Madison, Fall Into Last Place

MADISON, Wis. – Kansas State sits in eighth place and consolation match play following a bogeyed-plagued 36 holes of stroke play on Monday. Play was scheduled to start Sunday morning for East-West Match Play at the par 72, 6,324-yard University Ridge Golf Course, but was delayed due to poor weather. The Wildcats finished 39 strokes over par and 36 strokes off lead after two rounds of golf (615).
"It was just a day where we did not take advantage," K-State head coach Kristi Knight said. "This morning we went out and just shot really high scores. It's only an eight team field, we're certainly not the eighth-best team in this field. We were in the rough too often and got off to a slow start on the greens. The ladies tried, today was just not a good day."
Junior Reid Isaac led the way shooting 4-over par 148 during day one. A sluggish start from Isaac saw three straight bogeys on the back nine of round one and a score 3-over par 75. Isaac's second round of play was one bright spot for the team. The Texan used eleven holes at par and three birdies in the second round to finish 1-over 73 and in a tie for 18th.
"I thought Reid played a really solid second round," Knight said.
Chloe Weir started strong shooting even the first nine holes of round one but recorded ten bogeys on the day and finished 11-over par 155 and tied for 37th. Niamh McSherry cooled off from her title performance at the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational and sat one stroke behind Weir and in a tie for 38th with a 12-over par 156 performance. The front nine haunted McSherry in both rounds - shooting nine holes over par, including two double bogeys in a row on No. 3 and 4 in the first round. Sophomores Briony Bayles and Heather Fortushniak rounded out the Wildcats, both tied for 42nd, shooting 14-over par 158.
"You get up, dust yourself off and go out tomorrow and try to finish on a high note," Knight said. "We got knocked down today but you get right back in the battle. We'll learn from it, it's early in the year. We're a good team, this doesn't define who we are."
Haley Vargas won a tiebreaker to finish 6th in the individual pool. The freshman shot 14-over par 158 and sits in a tie for 42nd overall with her teammates Bayles and Fortushniak.
Tuesday will be the only day of match play because of the lost day of play on Sunday. K-State will compete for seventh place and is paired with the adjacent team in the standings, Grand Canyon who finished 15 strokes ahead of the Wildcats.
Big 12 foe Iowa State shot 581 and finished in second place, they will face off against event-host and first-place Wisconsin (579) for the title in match play Tuesday.
