K-State Women’s Golf Hoping History Repeats at Trinity Forest

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Reid Isaac and Niamh McSherry didn't know how good they had it, winning two of the first five tournaments of their collegiate careers, including SMU's Trinity Forest Invitational to close the fall semester of their freshman campaign. Three semesters and 16 tournaments wiser, the duo is headed back to Dallas looking to return K-State to that winning feeling.
"I think at the time when we won it was really exciting, but we didn't have any idea how rare that is now, how special that moment was," said Isaac, who also claimed individual medalist honors by shooting 1-under 215 in the team win. "Now we really do know all the cards have to be aligned and everything has to be in your favor for that to happen and I think this team is very capable of that."
The Wildcats tee off Monday at the par-72, 6,233-yard Trinity Forest Golf Club, the first of 54 holes over two days. Isaac and McSherry, now juniors, have staked claim to the top of the K-State depth chart and assumed leadership roles along with redshirt senior Chloe Weir, who will miss the opening event due to illness. They'll be joined in the scoring lineup by sophomores Heather Fortushniak and Briony Bayles, along with Texas native Haley Vargas, who will make her collegiate debut.
"(Knowing we've been successful here) excites me a lot more," Isaac said. "Niamh and I know the feeling of winning as a team out there and it was such an awesome experience. I really want that again for everyone else on the team who hasn't gotten to experience that yet."
Last season, K-State finished 9th at Trinity Forest, home of the PGA Tour's AT&T Byron Nelson Classic. The links-style course is unlike any other K-State will play on this season, featuring a links style course on a rolling meadow with tall native grasses and dramatic bunkering and green complexes. It shares similarities with Colbert Hills, K-State's home course, but is a more traditional, old links-style course.
"This golf course just opens up so many possibilities," K-State head golf coach Kristi Knight said. "There's so many different ways to be successful at Trinity Forest and we know we can do it. That's the key - embracing the uniqueness of it because we won't play another golf course like it this year."
K-State will compete against 11 total teams in the field, including nine among Golfweek's Preseason Top-100, and get a peek at three other Big 12 opponents. The full field includes (28)Baylor, Central Arkansas, Colorado, Memphis, North Texas, Oklahoma State, tournament-host SMU, (30)Texas Tech, Tulane and Tulsa.
The tournament will begin Monday at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start and competition will see continuous play through the second round. An individual and tournament champion will be crowned after round three, which begins at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.
"This is the most excited I've been for a golf tournament," McSherry said. "I feel like the preparation has been great, I feel like everyone has bonded together, I feel like this is a good starter for us."
