K-State Hosts Missouri Sunday at Mike Goss Tennis Stadium

Jan 30, 2020 | Tennis

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State women's tennis team continues its indoor campaign this weekend with a pair of matches, as the Wildcats travel to Wichita, Kansas to face off with Wichita State on Friday at 1 p.m. CT before hosting Missouri on Sunday at noon CT at the Mike Goss Tennis Center.

K-State (1-2) returns to the Sunflower State with aspirations of getting back to their winning ways following losses to No. 5 Duke and Mississippi State at the annual ITA Kickoff Weekend event in Durham, N.C.

Following a first-round 4-0 defeat at the hands of the nationally ranked Blue Devils on Saturday, the Wildcats went down early but rallied in the 4-2 loss to the Bulldogs to close out the national tournament. Trailing 3-0 midway through singles competition, K-State secured two crucial victories in the No. 3 and 5 spots from junior Margot Decker and senior Ines Mesquita to bring the deficit back to one point. However, Mississippi State closed out the match by grabbing the final point in the No. 4 spot, resulting in a 4-2 loss.

Looking ahead to the match with Wichita State, which has an identical record to K-State thus far in the spring campaign, the Shockers enter Friday's contest with two straight losses against Top 25 opponents. No. 11 Oklahoma State and No. 19 Kansas swiftly handled Wichita State, 6-1, during the last two matches.

Nationally, Wichita State's Marta Bellucco and Sarvinoz Saidhujaeva are ranked No. 53 in the current ITA Top 60 Doubles poll, which is one spot ahead of K-State's Decker and junior Anna Turco (No. 54).

In a matchup with the Shockers during the 2019 spring season, the Wildcats posted victories in every spot of the lineup during the dual match, resulting in an impressive 7-0 sweep.

Missouri (2-0) will play in Manhattan, Kansas for the first time since the 2017 spring campaign and compete against K-State for the first time since a dual match back in 2018. Before Sunday's match with the Wildcats, the Tigers host Missouri State and Saint Louis on Friday in a doubleheader.

During the last match with Missouri, K-State posted a 4-2 victory in Columbia, Mo., during the Spring of 2018. Mesquita, Rosanna Maffei and Maria Linares led the way for the Wildcats in singles play, clinching three victories from the No. 2, 3 and 6 spots to secure the win over the Tigers.
