K-State Drops Heartbreaker at TCU on Saturday

FORT WORTH, Texas – K-State overcame first half offensive struggles to capture a late lead against TCU, but the Horned Frogs edged past the Wildcats with a 65-61 win on Saturday at Schollmaier Arena.

K-State senior forward Peyton Williams finished the afternoon with a school record 22 rebounds. Williams entered the day ranked second in the Big 12 in rebounding, collected eight offensive rebounds and 14 rebounds. She finished with her ninth double-double of the season by adding 12 points, three assists and three blocks.

For the second straight game, K-State (9-10, 3-5 Big 12) held its opponent to nine first quarter points as the Wildcats won the opening frame, 11-9. The Wildcats held the Horned Frogs to a 20.0 percent (4-of-20) shooting effort in the opening quarter.

K-State pulled in 23 rebounds in the first quarter led by eight from Peyton Williams. The eight boards by Williams set the school record for rebounds in any quarter.

In the second quarter, Williams opened the frame with a layup to give K-State a 13-9 lead with 9:53 remaining. The Wildcats then went eight minutes without scoring, as TCU (16-4, 7-2 Big 12) used a 13-0 run to take a 22-13 lead with 1:54 left.

Angela Harris ended the drought for the Wildcats with a 3-pointer to bring K-State to within six, 22-16. The Horned Frogs would connect on a pair of 3-pointers to hold a 28-18 lead at the half.

K-State quickly eliminated the TCU lead with a 12-1 run in two and a half minutes to start the third quarter and hold a 30-29 lead. Jasauen Beard scored seven points during the run.

TCU would build an 11-point lead, 45-34, with a 13-2 run. Beard would tally four points before the end of the quarter to bring the Wildcats back within seven, 45-38, entering the fourth quarter. Beard finished with 13 points in the third frame and 16 for the game.

The Wildcats chipped away at the Horned Frogs lead in the fourth quarter and went back in front, 53-52, with 4:44 remaining as Williams finished a layup.

Christianna Carr buried her second 3-pointer of the afternoon to send the Wildcats in front, 59-56, with 2:02 remaining. The Horned Frogs answered with a three-pointer to square the game.

Ayoka Lee would knock down a pair of free throws with 1:09 left to give K-State a 61-59 lead. The Horned Frogs would close out the game with a 6-0 run.

Lee, a frontrunner for Big 12 Freshman of the Year honors, registered a school record fifth game with a double-double and five or more rebounds as she tallied 11 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks. This was her 11th double-double of the season.

TCU was led by Lauren Heard with 18 points, 12 rebounds and six assists.

K-State pulled in a season-high 64 rebounds on Saturday. The 64 rebounds were the second-most in program history and the most since K-State set the school record of 67 on November 17, 1975 against Nebraska.

The Wildcats shot 32.4 percent (23-of-71) from the field, which was bolstered by a 50-percent effort in the second half. The Horned Frogs tallied a 28.4 percent (21-of-74) outing but were 14-of-18 from the free throw line,.
