K-State Continues Spring Trek in South Carolina
Feb 28, 2020 | Men's Golf
MANHATTAN, Kansas – Following a rain-shortened, spring-opener K-State men's golf heads to South Carolina at the 8th annual Colleton River Collegiate, held at the Colleton River Club Peter Dye Course in Bluffton, South Carolina. The two-day, 54-hole tournament will consist of 36 holes on Monday followed by a final 18 on Tuesday.
"We are looking forward to returning to Colleton River this weekend," head coach Grant Robbins said. "It's a great tournament and it's a golf course that I feel fits our team pretty well."
The Wildcats travelled to Puerto Rico last weekend, getting one round in at the Dorado Beach Collegiate before persistent rains washed out the final two rounds. Senior Jacob Eklund and junior George Clarke both tied for 15th, shooting 2-under par 70 to lead the team to a 7th-place finish at 3-under par 285.
K-State finished third at last year's Colleton River event, behind top-10 finishes from Eklund and now-graduated Roland Massimino. That finish was followed by a team win at the Mission Inn Spring Spectacular, a similar trend the Wildcats wouldn't mind repeating.
"We had some success there last year and excited to get back and compete against another strong field," K-State head coach Grant Robbins said. "The Colleton River membership is very supportive of this event and they go out of their way to provide a first class experience for the players."
Joining K-State in South Carolina will be Bowling Green, Cincinnati, Eastern Michigan, Georgia Southern, Iowa, Big 12 foe Iowa State, Kent State, Memphis, Miami, tournament-host and defending team champ Michigan State, Notre Dame, Oakland, Ohio State and Rutgers.
K-State will feature the same lineup as last week. Eklund, who carded a 3-under 213 in last year's event, which included a second-round 68, will be first. He'll be followed by senior Ben Fernandez, freshman Riccardo Leo, sophomore Will Hopkins and junior George Clarke, who tallied his first career top-15 finish as a Wildcat last week. Junior Kyle Vance will compete as an individual.
