MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State senior Chris Ceballos was named to the watch list for the 2020 Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year presented by the Kamerion Wimbley Foundation, as announced by the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission
Ceballos was one of 60 catchers nominated for the honor that is awarded annually to the top Division I collegiate catcher. The list will be trimmed to semifinalists, who will be announced on May 19 before the finalists are declared June 3. A finale vote among the national committee will occur during the College World Series with the winner being revealed at the 23rd Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on June 25.
Ceballos, a native of Chino Hills, California, was one of three catchers from the Big 12 named to the watch list.
In his second season at K-State after transferring from Orange Coast College (California), Ceballos started 51 of 57 games last season behind the plate and has started 11 of the Wildcats' first 15 games in 2020.
The 6-foot backstop has thrown out six of eight potential base stealers this season after gunning down 17 would-be base stealers in 2019.
In 2019, Ceballos tied for the team lead with 10 home runs while leading the Cats with 40 runs batted. He hit .292 with a slugging percentage of .510 to go with a dozen doubles in his first season at K-State.
This season, Ceballos has driven in eight, including a home run. He had a season-high three hits (3 for 4) with two RBI Saturday at Stanford, helping the Cats take three of four games from the Cardinal.
K-State (9-6), who has won six of its last seven games, kicks off a nine-game homestand Tuesday against South Dakota State at 6 p.m. The Wildcats and Jackrabbits will play a two-game set, with both games being broadcast on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
