MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State head volleyball coach Suzie Fritz announced the addition of transfer setter Shelby Martin for the 2020 season.
Martin, who is entering her senior season, spent three seasons at East Carolina and was named 2017 American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year, the first such honor in ECU history. A 5-foot-11 native of Waxahachie, Texas, Martin was twice selected to the AAC Second Team (2017-18).
"Shelby has both experience and proven success at the collegiate level, which is what we were really attracted to and hoping to add to our young team," Fritz said of Martin. "As a setter, she will have a great amount of influence over our team's collective success. She has good size and athleticism to upgrade our team immediately. She possesses the right kind of intangible qualities that really connected with our team."
Martin comes to K-State after accumulating 2,623 career assists as a Pirate, the fourth-most in ECU history. In her three seasons, she averaged 8.15 assists per set with 1.98 career digs per set (636 total digs).
In 2019, Martin set career highs in digs (240) and service aces (27) while leading East Carolina to a 19-11 record (6-10 AAC).
During Martin's freshman-of-the-year campaign in 2017, she dished out 1,084 assists (9.34 per set) to go with 193 digs (1.66 per set) and 17 aces in guiding the Pirates to a 22-11 mark (13-7 AAC). She produced eight double-doubles in 2017 and ranked fourth in the AAC in total assists during conference play with 767.
Martin became the first player in ECU history to record a triple-double when she tallied 10 kills, 14 digs and 34 assists against Memphis on October 28, 2018.
Her prep career at Waxahachie included her being named 5A All-State, First Team All-District, 14-5A Offensive Player of the Year and Waxahachie Offensive Player of the Year. Martin played her club volleyball for Dallas Skyline Juniors, helping the club to a 16U Division national championship and earning a spot on the 16U Division All-Tournament Team.
Martin will join a class of four incoming freshmen in 2020 that includes outside hitter Aliyah Carter (Dubuque, Iowa), middle blocker Kadye Fernholz (Miller, South Dakota), defensive specialist/libero Mackenzie Morris (Dallas Texas) and outside hitter Jayden Nembhard (Keller, Texas).
