Job’s Comeback Victory Secures Win for K-State Over Nebraska, 4-3
Mar 04, 2020 | Tennis
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Dropping the first set out of the No. 4 hole, sophomore Karine-Marion Job scorched past Nebraska's Chloe Kuckelman in the next two sets to secure the win for the Kansas State, 4-3, on Wednesday afternoon at the Mike Goss Tennis Stadium. The victory came at a crucial point in the match as both teams were tied 3-3 midway through the No. 4 matchup.
"I think she has been doing well," said Head Coach Jordan Smith about Job's performance. "I told her that we needed her, and she stepped up. That's all we can ask. To be in that situation where she put pressure on herself shows all the hard work that she has put in. The first set was up and down, and she easily could have gotten frustrated with herself, but she didn't."
After a back-and-forth contest through five matchups in singles play, Job took it upon herself to deliver K-State (8-4) its eighth win of the year while closing out non-conference play on a high note with an impressive back end of the No. 4 battle. Losing the first set at a score of 4-6, the Lyon, France native never wavered from the challenge, sending the Cornhuskers packing with a score line of 6-3, 6-1 in the final two sets.
"I am pretty happy about my win," said Job. "It was a three-set match, so it was never easy. I didn't play well in the first set. It was kind of the same dynamic from doubles. At the end of the first set, I needed to make a change and play my game and get more comfortable. I just needed to step up for the team, and that's what I did. I was more aggressive, taking risks and it paid off."
Moving in the No. 4 spot back on February 23, Job has now compiled a 3-0 record from the fourth position while improving her singles mark in 2020 to 6-1.
"I think it's always good and motivating to win a match that close," said Job. "It's a really good feeling, and I feel really supported and loved."
After Nebraska took the first point of the day in doubles play, the Wildcats turned on the jets and got on the board with two impressive singles victories from junior Anna Turco and Maria Linares. Flipping spots in the lineup once again, Turco bounced back from a tough loss last week against SMU to run away with the win in the No. 1 hole as the Mondovi, Italy native posted a two-set win, 6-2, 6-0, over the Cornhuskers' Claire Reifeis.
The No. 2 match belonged to Linares from the start as the Maracay, Venezuela native blitzed Nebraska's Isabel Androver Galle in a two-set performance of her own, 6-2, 6-4. Linares is now 2-0 from the second spot since switching with Turco last week.
Senior Ines Mesquita contributed to the Wildcats' four points in the match as she defeated Nebraska's Jessica Aragon in the No. 6 position in two sets, 6-1, 6-3. This was Mesquita's first win on the year from the sixth spot.
Job and Linares kept their three-match win streak alive as their set with Nebraska's Hayley Haakenstad and Kristina Novak ended at 5-5 due to the No. 2 and 3 matchups falling in the Cornhuskers' favor. Turco and junior Margot Decker dropped their set in the No. 2 position, 2-6, to Nebraska's Androver Galle and Reifeis. Sophomore Ioana Gheorghita and Mesquita had their set tied up 4-4 before letting go of the next two games, losing their set 4-6 to allow the Cornhuskers to take a 1-0 lead.
K-State moved to 2-1 against Big 10 opponents this year. The Wildcats are now 2-1 for dual match play when the score is tied 3-3 heading into the final matchup of singles play.
Turning their attention to conference play, the Wildcats will continue the current home stand as Oklahoma State travels to Manhattan to kick off Big 12 competition next Friday, March 13 at 3 p.m., CT.
"We had a little bit of a setback in Iowa, but the way we have responded with SMU and Nebraska – two teams who are doing well in their conference – this should be good," said Smith. "We know it's going to be a tough slate. We have been there before, but I think the more we put ourselves out there and keep owning up to what we can do, I don't think any team we play should be a big difference. It's all about who wants it more, because I know our tennis is there for sure."
