MANHATTAN, Kansas – Kansas State women's basketball head coach Jeff Mittie has added to the 2020-21 roster with the addition of graduate transfer Sydney Goodson. Goodson, arriving from Texas Tech, will have one season of eligibility with the Wildcats.
Goodson joins an incoming freshmen class that includes: Taylor Lauterbach (Appleton, Wisconsin) and Jada Moore (Denver, Colorado).
"We are excited to have Sydney join our program for the upcoming season," stated Mittie about the latest backcourt addition. "She has played all three guard spots in the Big 12 and has been one of the most consistent performers in the league. She is a leader that plays with great passion and toughness and can stretch the defense with the three-pointer."
Goodson is a two-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team selection while competing for Texas Tech in the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons. During her time in Lubbock, Goodson played in 55 games with 47 starts an averaged 33.5 minutes per game.
The product of Argyle, Texas, carded 525 points (9.5 ppg), 291 rebounds (5.3 rpg), 162 assists (2.9 apg) and 98 steals (1.8 spg). In the 2019-20 season, Goodson carded 190 points (7.9 ppg) on a .411 field goal percentage, 136 rebounds (5.7 rpg), 67 assists (2.8 apg) and 48 steals (2.0 spg). She also was 2-of-89 (.281) from beyond the arc and held a .729 free throw percentage (35-of-48).
In the 2018-19 season with Texas Tech, Goodson averaged 36.2 minutes per game and ranked third in the Big 12 for minutes played. She averaged a career-best 10.8 points which was third most on the team. She pulled in 5.0 rebounds per game, handed out 3.1 assists and pocketed 1.6 steals per game.
Prior to her time at Texas Tech, Goodson played her freshman season in 2016-17 at Arizona State. Goodson saw action in 27 games, including 16 Pac 12 contests. She tallied 230 minutes played (8.5 mpg) with the Sun Devils and scored 68 points (2.5 ppg).
In her high school career, Goodson led Liberty Christian High School to back-to-back TAPPS state championships during her junior and senior seasons. In her senior season, Goodson was named the 2016 Denton Record-Chronicle co-Offensive Player of the Year after averaging 17.6 points, 3.7 assists and 2.9 steals per game while knocking down 41 percent of her 3-pointers.
As a junior, she was named to the TAPPS 1-5A Girls First Team and the Denton Record-Chronicle All-Area Basketball Second Team. After leading her team to their first TAPPS 5A state championship since 2011, Goodson was named to the 2015 TAPPS 5A All-Tournament Team after scoring 16 points in the championship game in Liberty's 45-38 win over Mansfield Timberview. In her freshman season, Goodson was named to the Denton Record-Chronicle All-Area Basketball Second Team.
Despite suffering through four season-ending injuries in the 2019-20 season which depleted the roster by early December, K-State (16-13, 10-8 Big 12) tied for fourth in the Big 12 and won seven of their last 10 games in the league.
K-State completed the season with a winning record for the sixth straight season. The Wildcats had their 2020 postseason destination derailed by the COVID-19 pandemic, which canceled the 2020 Phillips 66 Big 12 Women's Basketball Championship, the 2020 NCAA Tournament and the 2020 Postseason WNIT.
The Wildcats return 10 letter winners for the 2020-21 season including All-Big 12 First Team selection and Big 12 Freshman of the Year selection, Ayoka Lee. K-State also welcomes in redshirt freshman Jada Thorpe from injury and Lauterbach and Moore.
