K-State Reaches Big 12 Quarters After 68-51 Win Thursday

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Four Wildcats reached double digits in scoring and Kansas State used a strong first-half performance to cruise past Colorado, 68-51, in first round action of the 2009 Phillips 66 Big 12 Women's Big 12 Championship.
The win Thursday moved the Wildcats, seeded fifth in the tournament, to 24-6 on the season and also snapped a three-game losing streak in Big 12 Conference Championship action. Colorado dropped to 11-18 with the loss.
Ashley Sweat led the way for the Wildcats with 19 points, while Marlies Gipson pitched in a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Kari Kincaid added 14 points, which included four makes from beyond the three-point arc, while Shalee Lehning had 12 points and six assists.
K-State jumped out to the early lead and never looked back as it led by 19 at the break, 36-17. The Wildcats shot 52-percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes while forcing the Buffaloes into 11 first-half turnovers.
Gipson (10) and Sweat (11) each reached double figures in scoring during the first half alone as the duo combined for 21 points on 9-of-14 shooting in the half.
The Wildcats will next face fourth-seeded Texas A&M on Friday in the quarterfinals. Tip-off is set for 1:30 p.m. inside the Cox Center.
