Wildcats Ride Past Lady Raiders, 66-59

LUBBOCK, Texas - Ashley Sweat and Shalee Lehning each poured in 16 points and Kansas State ended a four-gamed slide in Big 12 play with a 66-59 victory over Texas Tech Sunday afternoon at United Spirit Arena.
Lehning also grabbed six rebound and dished out eight assists and Claire Coggins chipped in with 13 points for Kansas State (16-8, 4-7 Big 12), which picked up its first Big 12 road win of the year and won its fourth straight over the Lady Raiders.
Alesha Robertson scored 15 points and Texas Tech (14-11, 5-6 Big 12) got 11 more from Patrice Edwards and 10 from Raquel Christian but suffered its third straight loss.
Kansas State led by nine at the break and by as many as 14 points on four separate occasions during the second half, the last coming on a Lehning layup with eight minutes to go.
Tech tried to rally down the stretch and pulled to within five points twice in the final minute. But each time K-State did just enough at the free throw line to keep the Lady Raiders at bay, as the Wildcats combined to go 5-of-8 at the free throw line to seal the win.
Kansas State trailed by four early in the first half but responded with some stifling defense to take control of the game.
The Wildcats forced 15 straight Lady Raider misses from the floor during a 13-2 run that put K-State on top 21-14 with just over four minutes to go in the opening period following consecutive buckets by Sweat, who also led K-State on the glass with seven rebounds.
Another layup by Sweat and one by Coggins sandwiched around a pair of Tech free throws gave the Cats' their largest lead of the half at nine points.
Four straight free throws by Robertson pulled the Lady Raiders within nine, but Lehning netted a pair of layups and Sweat beat the halftime buzzer with a jumper in the paint to send the Wildcats to the locker room with a 31-22 edge.
Kansas State will look to make it two in a row for the first time since early January, when the Wildcats host Colorado at Bramlage Coliseum on Wednesday, Feb. 14, at 7 p.m. The game will be televised live by Fox Sports Net Midwest.
