(24/rv) K-State Rally Falls Short at West Virginia

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – After trailing by as many as 19 on Wednesday night at WVU Coliseum, (24/rv) Kansas State battled back to within two points in the fourth quarter but turnovers and missed free throws felled the Wildcats, as West Virginia held on for a 66-59 win.
Kansas State (18-8, 8-6 Big 12) had two players reach double figures, as senior guard Kindred Wesemann tallied 14 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals. Redshirt junior forward Kaylee Page added 12 points, including a 3-of-5 effort from beyond the arc.
West Virginia (18-8, 6-8) had two players record double-doubles as Chania Ray recorded 14 points and 10 assists while Lanay Montgomery carded 12 points and 12 rebounds.
The Wildcats shot 41.1 percent (23-of-56) from the field and West Virginia carded a 45.5 percent (25-of-55) performance, including a 60 percent effort in the fourth quarter. K-State was forced into 19 turnovers on Wednesday, while West Virginia handed the ball over 21 times. The Mountaineers registered a 19-13 edge in points off turnovers and a 38-29 advantage on the boards.
Kansas State held a 10-8 lead with 4:55 remaining in the first quarter. Kaylee Page tallied five early points for the Wildcats, including a three-pointer from the left wing. West Virginia would close out the opening quarter on a 15-2 run to hold a 23-12 lead. K-State tallied seven turnovers and five made field goals in the first 10 minutes.
West Virginia continued to pour it on in the second quarter, outscoring the Wildcats 12-4 in the first five minutes to build a 35-16 lead. Pardee tallied eight of the 12 points during the run and finished with 14 points for the night, all in the first half.
K-State closed the deficit to 12, 35-23, with 3:34 left in the first half. Eternati Willock registered five points in a 7-0 Wildcat run. Willock finished the game with nine points, all in the first half, as K-State trailed 39-25 at the break.
The Wildcats chipped away at the halftime deficit in the third quarter, outscoring the Mountaineers 11-8 in the frame. Both teams were sloppy in the quarter, finishing with a combined 12 turnovers.
Kansas State used an 8-0 run to pull within three points, 47-44, with 8:35 left in the fourth quarter and force a West Virginia timeout. Wesemann started the rally with a three-pointer. Kayla Goth followed with a steal and layup. Wesemann's second 3-pointer in a minute and a half forced the timeout.
K-State pulled to within two points twice in the fourth quarter, the last on a Kaylee Page 3-pointer with 4:34 left. West Virginia then used 9-0 run to distance themselves from the Wildcats with a 61-50 lead. The Wildcats were unable to get closer than seven in the final 2:21 of the contest. Wesemann finished with nine points in the fourth quarter, while Page and Goth added four points apiece.
Kansas State will end its two-game road trip on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m., as the Wildcats face TCU in Fort Worth. Saturday's game will be broadcast on FSN and on the K-State Sports Network.
