OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Kansas State sophomore guard Kayla Goth scored a career-high 25 points and the Wildcats used a suffocating defense over the final six minutes as K-State earned a 74-67 victory over Iowa State in the quarterfinals of the 2017 Big 12 Women's Basketball Championship on Saturday at Chesapeake Energy Arena.
Goth, whose previous career high was 23 points in the 2016-17 season opener against Chicago State, came off the bench to net her seventh career double-figure game and first since the Wildcats and Cyclones met in Ames, Iowa, on January 21. The product of DeForest, Wisconsin, also carded five rebounds and three steals.
Freshman Eternati Willock registered her second career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, including three defensive boards in the fourth quarter to help K-State put the game away. The duo of Goth and Willock paced a K-State (22-9, 11-7 Big 12) bench that outscored the Iowa State reserves, 45-14, the most bench points in the Jeff Mittie era at K-State.
Senior guard Kindred Wesemann also scored in double figures with 12 points, including a perfect 4-for-4 mark from the free-throw line, for her 27th double-figure game of the season. Wesemann has now made 18-consecutive free throws. Breanna Lewis had six points – all coming within a three-minute span late in the fourth quarter – and seven rebounds as she battled foul trouble throughout the contest.
The Wildcats were able to slow down a Cyclone team that had won five-straight games as Iowa State (18-12, 9-9 Big 12) suffered its first loss since K-State topped ISU on February 11, in Manhattan. Iowa State was led by Emily Durr with 21 points on 7-of-22 shooting, including a 5-of-16 mark from 3-point range, while Heather Bowe had 13 points and eight rebounds.
K-State tightened up defensively over the last six minutes of the game and made all 14 free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter, a feat that led the Wildcats to a 20-of-24 mark at the line for the game. K-State led, 54-47, end the end of the third quarter, but Iowa State jumped out to a 9-2 run to tie the game at 56 and force K-State to call a timeout with 6:39 remaining.
The timeout served its purpose as the Wildcats went on an 18-11 run over the final six minutes of play and forced Iowa State to go just 3-of-13 from the field as they closed out the seven-point win.
K-State started the game slow as the Wildcats made only two of their 15 shots in the first quarter and scored single digits in the first 10 minutes for a third-straight game to trail 15-7. However, Kansas State started the second quarter 5-of-7 from the field and 2-of-3 on 3-pointers to take a 19-16 lead with 6:40 left before halftime. The surge was led by Goth, who made buckets on three-straight possessions before forcing Iowa State to call a timeout on a 3-pointer that broke the 16-16 tie. The sophomore scored 11 of her points in the second quarter.
In the second quarter, the Wildcats held ISU to nine points on 3-of-18 shooting as it marked the 19th time this year K-State held an opponent to single digits in a quarter.
Both teams came out firing on all cylinders after intermission as K-State was 6-of-9 from the field, while Iowa State was 6-of-10. The Cyclones took a 38-36 lead with 5:20 left in the third on a fast-break layup, which caused K-State to call a timeout. K-State then went on a 12-0 run over the next three minutes, which was capped by a Shaelyn Martin 3-pointer to take a 50-38 advantage.
Kansas State advances to play top-seeded Baylor in the semifinals on Sunday, at 1:30 p.m., inside Chesapeake Energy Arena. It is the first time K-State will play in the Big 12 Championship Semifinals since the 2011-12 season. The game will be shown to a national audience on FS1, while fans can hear the game on the K-State Sports Network and online at www.k-statesports.com.
