OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – (2/2) Baylor's Nina Davis scored 24 points on 10-of-15 shooting to lead an aggressive Lady Bear offensive attack in an 88-71 victory over (24/rv) Kansas State in the semifinals of the 2017 Phillips 66 Big 12 Women's Basketball Championship Sunday at Chesapeake Energy Arena.
The Lady Bears (30-2, 17-1 Big 12), who shot 54.1 percent for the game, had four players in double figures as Kalani Brown and Alexis Prince each had 18 and Beatrice Mompremier added 10 to go along with Davis' effort.
Kansas State (22-10, 11-7 Big 12) also had four double-figure scorers led by junior guard Karyla Middlebrook with 20 points, her 12th double-figure scoring game of the season and the second time she notched at least 20 points. Kindred Wesemann and Breanna Lewis carded 15 and 14 points, respectively. Coming off a career-high 25 points on Saturday against Iowa State, Kayla Goth reached double figures again with 12 points.
Lewis improved her career point total to 1,520 to move into 10th in K-State history, while she added 11 rebounds to notch her eighth double-double this year and 20th of her career.
Poor shooting from the free-throw line hindered the Wildcats throughout the game as they made just 11-of-25 (.440) attempts despite entering the day at a 69.0-percent clip. It was K-State's lowest free-throw percentage this season.
Kansas State was able to get out of its first-quarter offensive funk by scoring 18 points in the first frame, the most by the Wildcats in a first quarter in five contests. They pulled to within two at 20-18 late in the first quarter, but Baylor went on a 15-6 run over the next five minutes to extend its lead to double figures and take control of the game.
The Lady Bears' high percentage was given a boost by a 63.2-percent clip in the second quarter to build a 14-point halftime lead at 52-38. It was the first time K-State allowed 50 points in a half since January 2, 2016. That lead was extended to 20 points three minutes into the third quarter and Baylor kept the Wildcats at arms distance the rest of the way.
Kansas State is in line to make its second-straight NCAA Tournament appearance and 15th in program history. The 2017 NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament Selection Show is slated for Monday, March 13, at 6 p.m. (CT), and will be shown nationally on ESPN.
