Jul 20, 2020 | Volleyball
MANHATTAN, Kan. – For the 10th consecutive year, Kansas State volleyball was recognized with the Team Academic Award by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) for the 2019-20 academic year, the organization announced Monday.
The honor, which is given to programs with a team grade-point average (GPA) of 3.30 or higher during the school year, is the 18th in K-State volleyball history. The streak of 10 straight honors extends the longest such stretch in program history, three years longer than its next-best streak of seven straight awards from 2001-02 through 2007-08.
The team accolade caps another strong academic year for the Wildcats. In total, seven Cats were named Academic All-Big 12 First Team selections, including Brynn Carlson, Sarah Dixon and Mckenzi Weber who each turned in a perfect 4.0 GPA. K-State led the Big 12 three student-athletes boasting 4.0 GPAs.
Additionally, Carlson was selected to the 2019 Academic All-America Third Team and All-District First Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The Woodbury, Minnesota, native became the first Wildcat to collect Academic All-America honors since 2010 and the sixth in program history.
The AVCA Team Academic Award was initiated in 1992-93 and honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year. This year, a record 1,313 teams received the award, breaking the record set last year by nearly 200 teams.
All nine teams in the Big 12 earned the 2019-20 AVCA Team Academic Award.
K-State is set to return nine letterwinners from last year's squad, including starters Carlson, Loren Hinkle, Dru Kuck and Megan Vernon. The Cats also welcome the nation's 23rd-ranked recruiting class, according to PrepVolleyball.com, that includes Aliyah Carter, Kadye Fernholz, Mackenzie Morris and Jayden Nembhard. K-State has had a top-30 recruiting class each of the last three seasons.
