Tillmanns, O’Neill Lead K-State After Day One of the Colonial Collegiate

FORT WORTH, Texas – K-State sophomore Tim Tillmanns got off to a fast start, carding three birdies over the first five holes - part of nine total on the day - and freshman Luke O'Neill added six birdies as both led the Wildcats during the first day of the Colonial Collegiate Invitational, hosted at the Par 70, 7,204-yard Colonial Country Club on Monday.
Tillmanns, a native of Cologne, Germany, sat in a tie for ninth place thanks to a 2-under par 68 in the first round and was at 1-over-par 141, just two strokes behind the leaders. O'Neill, a product of Connemara, Ireland, was one stroke behind Tillmanns after his first two rounds as a Wildcat and was tied for 13th tallying a 2-over par 72 in the first round and 1-over par 71 in the second round. K-State's 13-over par 573 put them in a tie for fourth place with Texas Tech, but just three strokes behind Kansas in third.
"Obviously starting with three birdies, I felt like I was in a pretty good place," Tillmanns said of the fast start. "I felt like it took a lot of pressure off myself, because I knew as the day progressed, the wind was going to pick up even more and there were very tough conditions. I was more relaxed and more confident. I knew with the way I played that I could have birdie opportunities on every hole, I just needed to be patient and wait for the putts to fall."
Junior Will Hopkins sits four strokes behind O'Neill at 6-over par 146 following his two rounds, and in a tie 27th. Super senior Jacob Eklund bounced back from a tough first round to shoot 1-under par 69 in the second round. That helped him to a tie 38th at 9-over par 149. Redshirt sophomore Ryan Bender sits one stroke behind Eklund and in a tie for 41st, while senior George Clarke score of 17-over par 157 has him in a tie for 54th.
"It was a grind out there today," K-State head coach Grant Robbins said. "It's a very difficult course, when you factor in the windy conditions it makes it tough to score. I'm happy with how we played. It's really difficult to focus for 36 holes when the conditions are the way they are, but I thought our guys did a really good job of staying patient and showing a lot of fight. We just have to keep the same mindset tomorrow and keep playing aggressively to conservative targets."
Oklahoma led the field at 3-under par 557, and were the only team under par, four strokes ahead of Texas. After 36 holes there was a four-way tie on top of the individual leaderboard at 1-under par 139.
K-State's two groups will tee off from hole No. 1 at 8 and 8:09 a.m. for Tuesday's third and final round. Hole by hole scoring of the final round can be followed on golfstat.com.
