Wildcats Rack Up Wins Against Utah, Texas Tech at Big 12/Pac-12 Dual
Jan 11, 2021 | Tennis
ARLINGTON, Texas – A solid start to doubles play trickled into singles play for the Kansas State women's tennis team, who poured in four singles victories in the first session of the Big 12/Pac-12 Dual down in Arlington, Texas at the Arlington Tennis Center.
"I loved the energy that we played with today," said head coach Jordan Smith. "Yesterday, we spent a lot of time talking about our expectations for the season. One of the key points was not just doing the right thing during competitions. It has to be done on each day to the best of their abilities. The ladies set the tone in our warmups with their swagger which led to a solid doubles performance across the board."
The Wildcats, who competed for the first time since early November, started out fast in doubles play, as the team took two of the three sets from Utah in the doubles' portion of the tournament.
Inside the Arlington Tennis Center, juniors Karine-Marion Job and Maria Linares went to work once again in the No. 1 spot for K-State and fought off a tough matchup with the Utes' Lindsay Hung and Madeline Lamoreaux, 7-5. The victory improved Job and Linares' career record in doubles play to 16-4.
It was the same story for the Wildcats' Manami Ukita and Ioana Gheorghita, as the duo hunkered down and outplayed Utah's Jasmine Rich and Emily Dush, resulting in a 6-3 set win from the No. 3 position.
"Manami and Ioana picked up a win and that was their first time ever playing together," Smith stated. "Not even in practice have they paired up. Great to see how well they did together."
That momentum from doubles' competition carried over to singles play on Monday's schedule, as K-State grabbed four of the possible six victories against Utah and Texas Tech opponents.
Job continued her momentum from her doubles' victory and knocked off Lisa Mays from Texas Tech in three sets, 6-0, 3-6, 7-5. Junior Rosanna Maffei pushed past the Red Raiders' Margarita Skriabina in three sets to give K-State its second singles' win, as the Atripalda, Italy, native held off the former No. 114 ranked player in the nation with a line score of 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
The senior tandem of Margot Decker and Lilla Barzo extended K-State's win total to four in singles play after the victories from Job and Maffei. Decker, who did not get to compete in the last fall tournament in 2020, jump started her 2021 season with a dominant performance against Utah's McKay in two sets, 6-1, 6-0.
Barzo, who resides from Szeged, Hungary, shook off the rust since her last event back at the Kansas Invitational on October 2-4, and delivered a two-set victory over the Red Raiders' Metka Komac, 6-3, 6-2.
"All of our ladies did great in singles today," said Smith. "They battled hard and won four out of the six singles matches. Good start for us with only having three team practices before this event."
Ukita and junior Anna Turco were unable to sustain the same success in singles' play as their counterparts, which resulted in defeats from Texas Tech opponents. The Red Raiders' Olivia Peet and Bojana Marinkov both handled Ukita and Turco in two sets. Those two wins by Texas Tech prevented K-State from sweeping the Red Raiders on Monday evening in singles competition.
With the four victories against Utah and Texas Tech in singles play, K-State has now eclipsed 40 individual wins for the 2020-21 campaign.
The Wildcats will remain in Arlington, Texas, for the second segment of the Big 12/Pac-12 Dual, which begins tomorrow afternoon.
"We will need to maintain this assertiveness tomorrow in tough matches against Kansas and Texas Tech," Smith said.
