Oct 11, 2021 | Women's Golf
BROKEN ARROW, Okla. – It was tough going for the Kansas State women's golf team as the Wildcats sit in 12th on the team leaderboard following the first day of the Dale McNamara Invitational at the Golf Club of Oklahoma on Monday.
A trio of Wildcats, Remington Isaac, Manon Donche-Gay and Lilly Whitley - the latter two competing as individuals - are each in the top 20.
The day got off to a slow start as play was scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. but was pushed back two hours due to inclement weather conditions. This setback changed the plan to get both the first and second rounds completed on Monday, instead play was stopped with just a few holes remaining in the second round. Tuesday will see the finish of the second round and conclusion of the event with the final round.
K-State carded an 18-over par 306 in the first round and currently sit at 17-over par toward the conclusion of the second round.
"Today was a missed opportunity for us," head coach Kristi Knight said. "This course penalizes poor shots, and we hit too many poor shots."
Isaac, a freshman, is in the midst of adding another magnificent performance to her resume as she leads Kansas State out of the scoring lineup. Isaac shot a 2-over par 74 first 18 and is 1-over par so far in the second round to sit in a tie for 18th at 3-over par on the individual leaderboard.
The two other Cats who shined on Monday, Whitley, a freshman, and Donche-Gay, a junior, are both competing as individuals. Whitley, who is playing in her second ever collegiate event, is currently tied for 15th place. The freshman had the best first round of any Wildcat at 1-under par 71, but she has slipped slightly on the leaderboard during round two as she is currently 3-over par on the round. Whitley put herself in great position to possibly claim her first career top-20 finish with the strong showing.
Donche-Gay shot a 1-over par 73 first round and is a 2-over par in the second round to reside in a tie for 18th place at 3-over par.
"I'm pleased for Lilly and Manon. They played well this morning," Knight said. "It is a great experience for them, and I think it will pay dividends for them and our team in the Spring."
Briony Bayles recorded a 5-over par 77 in the first round, and she is currently tied for 60th place at 12-over par. Behind her is Haley Vargas, who is tied for 64th place at 13-over par.
Gabriela McNelly, who is in a tie for 69th place at 15-over par, was another Wildcat who had a terrific first round. She shot a 2-over par 74 score in the opening 18 but is now 13-over in her second 18.
Heather Fortushniak is in a tie for 74th place at 17-over par. The senior carded a 10-over par 82 opening round and is 7-over par in her second 18.
UNLV is in first place with a commanding 11-stroke lead over Nebraska. The Rebels are led so far by Kendall Todd, who is atop the individual leaderboard after a 4-under par 68 round one and an even-par score thus far in round two.
Kansas State will tee off at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday to finish off the second round of the Dale McNamara Invitational with the final round to follow. Fans can follow live scoring throughout the day at Golfstat.com.
