LOXLEY, Ala. – Led by veterans Will Hopkins and Tim Tillmanns, the Kansas State men's golf team is firmly in sixth place on the leaderboard after two rounds at the Steelwood Collegiate.
"It was a solid day for us, especially in the afternoon round," head coach Grant Robbins said. "We kind of hit a lull there toward the end of the first round and the start of the second round, but the guys for the most part did a really good job of staying patient, and we got some putts to fall in the last few holes."
The Wildcats currently are at 6-under par 570, after a 2-over par 290 round one that was followed by a dominant 8-under par 280 round two. The second round score tied the second-lowest of the season for the Cats.
"We just need to keep that momentum going into tomorrow," Robbins said.
Hopkins, a senior, is playing his best golf of the season through the first 36 holes. He's tied for 10th place at 3-under par 141 after an even-par 72 first round and a 3-under par 69 round two. The Lincolnshire, England product will be looking for his third career top-10 finish and first of the season when play resumes on Sunday.
The other Wildcat in the top-20 of the leaderboard is Tillmanns, a junior who is tied for 15th place at 2-under par 142. Like Hopkins, Tillmanns saved his best golf for the second round when he carded a 3-under par 69 to follow up his 1-over par 73 opening round.
True freshman Nicklaus Mason recorded a 1-under par 71 first round and an even-par 72 second round to sit in a tie for 22nd place at 1-under par 143.
Next on the leaderboard for K-State is sophomore Luke O'Neill in a tie for 33rd place at 1-over par 145. After carding a 3-over par 75 round one, O'Neill made a 14-spot rise in the standings thanks to a 2-under par 70 second round.
Rounding out the scoring lineup is Cooper Schutlz who's current tally of 9-over 153 has him tied for 68th place. Schultz scored a 2-over par 74 first round and a 7-over par 79 second round.
Ethan Miller, who is competing as an individual, is tied for 39th place at 3-over par 147. Miller shot a 3-over 75 opening round and an even par 72 round two.
Missouri is in first place after day one as the Tigers have a comfortable five-shot lead at 17-under par 559. However, it's Mississippi State golfer Ford Clegg atop the individual leaderboard at 10-under par 134.
The Wildcats, who are four strokes off the top-five, will be hoping for a strong round three on Sunday to capture their second top-five finish this season.
Play concludes at the Steelwood Country Club on Sunday morning at 7:40 a.m. with a double tees start. Fans can follow live scoring at Golfstat.com.
