MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State men's golf team signed two golfers to National Letters of Intent on Wednesday as head coach Grant Robbins announced the addition of German National Team member Laurenz Schiergen and Owasso, Oklahoma product Ben Stoller to open the fall signing period.
Schiergen will provide immediate help to the Wildcats as he will enroll in January and compete for K-State this spring. As a member of the German National Team, he participated in 10 professional events across Europe in 2021 with four top-30 finishes, including a third-place finish in the German National Amateur and a fifth-place finish in the 2021 German Match Play Championship.
"We are very excited to have Laurenz join us this spring," Robbins said. "Being able to add someone with the amount of international tournament experience he has should be a big boost to our team going forward."
Schiergen broke onto the European Golf scene when he won the 2018 Sir Henry Cooper Masters by 10 shots with scores of 71-65-67-71 (14-under par). He would continue his rise in the following years, finishing 13th at the 2019 European Boys Team Championship and advancing to play in the 2020 British Amateur.
The international signee currently ranks 109th in the European Amateur rankings and has been ranked as high as 181st in the World Amauter Golf rankings. Along with his golf success, Schiergen has served in the German Military for the past two years.
There will be high expectations for the experienced Schiergen to become a solid contributor to an already deep Wildcat squad in the spring.
"Having served in the German military for two years and the fact that he has already competed and been successful in several professional tournaments across Europe, we feel like Laurenz has a chance to come in and have an impact right away," Robbins said.
The other signing for this fall class, Stoller is an exciting young prospect that is set to join the Wildcats in the Fall of 2022.
"Ben is obviously an exceptional player, but on top of that he is just a fantastic all-around individual," Robbins said. "What sets him apart is his passion for the game, his competitiveness and his overall drive."
As a star for Owasso high school under former Oklahoma head coach of the year Cory Burd, Stoller became one of the most decorated golfers in school history. He finished second in the 2020 AJGA Kansas City Junior and won the 2020 OJGT Lake Hefner Shootout with scores of 68-63.
Stoller has had an incredible run throughout 2021, finishing sixth in the 2021 AJGA Tulsa Junior and second in the Oklahoma State Junior Stroke Play Championship with a sensational final round of 63. He also won a trio of headline events with titles at the OJGT Lincoln Park Classic, the Red River Challenge and the Oklahoma 6A State Championship.
Robbins has high praise for the Owasso native, who is currently ranked 81st nationally by the Junior Golf Scoreboard.
"He is one of the hardest-working players that I have seen at that age and someone we have been watching and recruiting for quite some time," Robbins said. "We are excited to welcome him to Manhattan and can't wait to start working with him."
Stoller is yet another example of the young talent filling up the roster for K-State. Four underclassmen - Cooper Schultz, Nicklaus Mason, Ethan Miller and Luke O'Neill - have all been major contributors this season for the Cats, and with this addition, the future of K-State men's golf continues to point in the right direction.
Kansas State will return to action when the spring season tees off February 14-15 at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate, the first of six events scheduled for the spring. The Wildcats are coming off an encouraging fall slate where they captured two top-five team finishes.
