Nov 16, 2021 | Volleyball
MANHATTAN, Kan. – With a conference-leading 4.29 digs per set over two matches against Iowa State, K-State libero Mackenzie Morris was selected as Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week, the league office revealed Tuesday.
Morris, who earns her second weekly honor of the season, helped K-State to a series split with the Cyclones after recording 16 digs in a three-set victory Saturday after adding 14 digs in a four-set contest last Thursday. Her 4.29 digs per set average was more than 0.50 better than any other player in the Big 12 last week.
The Dallas, Texas, product's 16-dig effort on Saturday helped the Wildcats snap a 13-match road skid at Iowa State, as the Cats claimed their first victory at Hilton Coliseum since the 2007 season. Along with K-State's 12 blocks Saturday, the Cats limited ISU to a .133 hitting efficiency.
Morris (4.15) is currently one of just four players in the Big 12 to average better than 4.00 digs per set. Her career average of 4.09 digs per set currently ranks second in program history in the rally-scoring era (since 2001).
Morris' weekly award marks the third for a Wildcat this season and the 70th under head coach Suzie Fritz. The distinction is the Cats' 23rd weekly conference accolade since 2018.
K-State (15-8, 6-6 Big 12) takes on No. 2 Texas on Thursday and Friday in its final road series of the season. Both contests will air on the Longhorn Network and the ESPN app, with radio coverage available on News Radio KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM).
