STATESBORO, Ga. – Battling tough course conditions for a second straight day, Kansas State sophomore Tim Tillmanns and junior teammate Will Hopkins both recorded top-10 finishes in their spring debuts following Monday's final round of the Thomas Sharkey Individual Collegiate held at the par-72, 6,876-yard Georgia Southern University Golf Course.
Tillmanns, who finished in third, notched his second top-10 finish of the season, and first career top-five finish. The Cologne, Germany product carded a final score of 2-under par 218, three strokes ahead of fourth place. Hopkins, who entered Monday's final round in seventh, moved up one spot to finish sixth after tallying a 7-over par 223, which included a 2-over par 74 on Monday.
"We had some solid scores today," head coach Grant Robbins said. "The conditions were extremely difficult with the cold and the wind, and I thought our guys did a good job of grinding through adversity. This was a great experience for us having to battle through the weather and course conditions, especially coming off such a long layoff. We have some things to work on, but we are looking forward to getting the spring season started in a couple weeks."
The trio of senior George Clarke, redshirt sophomore Ryan Bender and sophomore Riccardo Leo all finished in a tie for 11th at 13-over par 229. Leo jumped eight spots during the final round thanks to a team-best score of 1-over par 73. Clarke moved up six spots after carding a 2-over par 74 on Monday, and Bender climbed two spots. Freshman Luke O'Neill finished at 16-over par 232 and in 16th place during his second college tournament.
The Wildcats return to team action with the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate, February 14-16, held at the Magnolia Groves Crossing Course in Mobile, Alabama.
