K-State Looks to Continue Strong Season, Announces Spring Schedule
Feb 01, 2021 | Volleyball
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Following a third-place finish in the Big 12 during the fall season and looking to bolster its postseason résumé, K-State head volleyball coach Suzie Fritz revealed the Wildcats' spring volleyball schedule, featuring seven non-conference matches beginning February 25.
K-State, who finished the fall season with a 10-6 conference record, will open the spring campaign against Wichita State at Bramlage Coliseum at 6 p.m. The Wildcats will return the trip to Charles Koch Arena in Wichita on Saturday, February 27.
"After completing a productive Big 12 schedule in the fall, our goals for the spring schedule included many factors: first, the health and safety of our athletes," said Fritz. "Second, the evaluation of available non-conference opponents and, lastly, opportunities to qualify and prepare for the NCAA Tournament.
"We are pleased that we were able to put together a seven-match non-conference schedule that accomplishes these objectives."
Following the home-and-home series with the Shockers, the Cats' remaining five contests will all be held at Bramlage Coliseum throughout the month of March. K-State will play host to Texas State (March 4), Saint Louis (March 14), Creighton (March 20) and Wayne State (March 27-28).
"Additionally, we have the opportunity for six of those seven matches to be played at home in Bramlage Coliseum," Fritz added. "The team is ready and excited to get back to work and finish what we started in the fall. We're hopeful to put an exclamation point on what has been a productive, but challenging, season for our team thus far."
All seven matches can be heard on News Radio KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM) and online at K-StateSports.com/watch with Rob Voelker on the call. Five of the six home matches are scheduled to stream live on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
Finishing the fall portion of the schedule ranked No. 10 in the AVCA Fall Top-15 Poll, K-State seeks a bid into the 48-team NCAA Tournament field to be announced on April 4. The field will consist of 30 automatic conference qualifiers and 18 at-large selections.
"At this point, the NCAA has not identified specific criteria for NCAA participation beyond the fact that it will be a reduced field and it is likely that it will be played at pre-determined sites," said Fritz. "Assuming we continue to progress and improve through the spring, this team deserves to be a tournament team based on our finish in the Big 12 and our performance during the fall."
K-State was led by four players who registered over 100 kills during the 16-match fall conference slate: Aliyah Carter (228), Brynn Carlson (143), Holly Bonde (108) and Kadye Fernholz (104). Freshman Mackenzie Morris had a team-high 256 digs and 22 service aces.
The Cats' third-place league finish marked their first top-three finish since the 2008 season.
Attendance at Bramlage Coliseum will remain limited to 15 percent capacity. Fans can attend matches free of charge and will be allowed to sit in designated chairback and Cat cushion seats.
