K-State Returns to Team Golf Action in Alabama
Feb 12, 2021 | Men's Golf
MANHATTAN, Kan. – After only competing in one tournament during the fall and playing in an individual-only event two weeks ago, the K-State men's golf team returns to a team-scored format at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate, held at the par-72, 7,212-yard Magnolia Grove Crossing Golf Course in Mobile, Alabama.
The three-day, 54-hole tournament will take place Sunday through Tuesday, consisting of 18 holes each day.
The Wildcats sent five individuals to the Thomas Sharkey Individual Collegiate to open the month of February, with all five tallying top-20 finishes, and K-State will look to put together another strong showing in their first of five team events prior to the Big 12 Championship.
"We are looking forward to competing in Alabama this weekend," head coach Grant Robbins said. "This was a recent addition to our schedule since the one at Hammock Beach was canceled. We are grateful to Coach (Ben) Hannan and South Alabama for helping us out.
"It's been a few years since we have been to this tournament, and we are excited to be going back," Robbins continued. "It's a great golf course, and I think it's a course that fits our team well. It definitely rewards players that can drive it well. It will be important for us to get down there and get used to the conditions on and around the greens. It should be a great test for us coming out this spring."
The Wildcats have competed in the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate on two other occasions, finishing fourth in 2016 and seventh in 2017.
Graduate student Jacob Eklund will make his spring debut this weekend. Eklund last competed at the Colonial Collegiate Invitational in September, and will be in the No. 1 slot for K-State. Freshman Luke O'Neill, junior Will Hopkins, sophomore Riccardo Leo, and senior George Clarke round out the rest of the scoring lineup. Redshirt sophomore Ryan Bender will compete as an individual.
Joining the Wildcats in Alabama is a competitive field, consisting of Davidson, Illinois, Illinois State, Indiana, Kent State, Lipscomb, Louisville, Michigan, Southern Miss, tournament host South Alabama, Toledo, UAB and Western Kentucky.
K-State will tee off from the first hole at 8:40 a.m. (CT) on Sunday. Live scoring can be followed at golfstat.com.
