Leo’s Career Day Highlights K-State’s Round Two in Mobile
Feb 15, 2021 | Men's Golf
MOBILE, Ala. – Despite a weather delay, sophomore Riccardo Leo carded a 4-under par 68 - a career best for the Torino, Italy product - during Monday's second round of the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate, held at the par-72, 7,212-yard Magnolia Grove Crossing Golf Course.
Leo, who came into the day in a tie for 64th, jumped up to a tie for 24th at even par 144. With the score of 68, Leo tied fellow sophomore teammate Tim Tillmanns for the best round of the season for the Wildcats. Redshirt sophomore Ryan Bender, who is competing as an individual, also tallied a career-best round of 3-under par 69, and he is also in a tie for 24th.
K-State is tied for sixth with Davidson at 5-under par 571, six strokes back of a fourth-place tie between Indiana and Louisville.
"I thought we showed a lot of fight today," head coach Grant Robbins said. "We got off to a solid start and played really well in the rain. We gave away a few shots coming back out after the delay, but the guys did a great job finishing play until the last three holes. We are making a lot of birdies, we just have to clean up some of the bogeys and avoid the big numbers. It's going to be a cold one tomorrow, but all the guys are playing well. If we can get everyone clicking, we can make a move up the board."
Junior Will Hopkins continued his strong tournament, shooting 1-under par 71 on Monday to sit in a tie for 10th at 4-under par 140. Senior George Clarke also shot 1-under par 71 for a second-consecutive round, putting him at 2-under par 142 and in a tie for 18th.
Freshman Luke O'Neill carded a 2-over par 74, putting him at 3-over par 147 for the tournament and in a tie for 41st headed into Tuesday's final round. Graduate student Jacob Eklund shot 7-over par 79, and he sits in a tie for 74th at 9-over par 153.
Illinois stayed on top of the leaderboard, as the Illini enter Tuesday's final round with an 11-stroke advantage in large part to Michael Feagles, who at 10-under par 134 is atop the individual leaderboard.
The final round of the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate will begin with an 11 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday. Scores can be followed at golfstat.com.
