AUSTIN, Texas – The Kansas State men's golf team shot 7-over par 291 in both the first and second rounds on Monday to open up the George Hannon Collegiate, held at the par-71, 7,412-yard UT Golf Club in Austin, Texas.
The Wildcats, who improved one spot on the leaderboard during the afternoon, are in a tie with Big 12 foe West Virginia for seventh place at 14-over par 582. K-State currently sits six strokes back of sixth-place TCU and four strokes ahead of 50th-ranked Little Rock.
"I'm proud of how the guys grinded it out today," head coach Grant Robbins said. "I thought we hit a lot of good shots, but we just struggled quite a bit on the greens. The grain on the greens here make it difficult to read and when you miss a few short ones, it puts tremendous pressure on the rest of your game. The guys are playing well. If we can get a few putts to drop early in our round tomorrow and get some confidence, we can fire a low one and make a move."
Sophomore Tim Tillmanns led K-State on day one, as the Cologne, Germany product tallied a 1-over par 143, including even-par 71 during the afternoon round. Tillmanns enters the final round tied for 19th. Freshman Luke O'Neill made a late afternoon push, as his back-to-back birdies to end the round salvaged his day. He is tied for 33rd at 4-over par 146.
Junior Will Hopkins finished the day one stroke behind O'Neill at 5-over par 147 and in a tie for 38th. Sophomore Riccardo Leo is in a tie for 46th at 6-over par 148, and senior George Clarke currently sits at 11-over par 153 and in a tie for 64th.
No. 2 Oklahoma leads the George Hannon Collegiate, as the Sooners have a two-stroke advantage over No. 12 Texas. The Sooners' Logan McCallister is atop the individual leaderboard at 9-under par 133, and he will go into Tuesday's final round with a one-stroke lead.
The final round of the George Hannon Collegiate tees off with an 8 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday, and live results can be followed at golfstat.com.
