K-State’s Tillmanns Earns Top-15 Finish at George Hannon Collegiate
Mar 16, 2021 | Men's Golf
AUSTIN, Texas – The Kansas State men's golf team fell two spots during Tuesday's final round but saw sophomore Tim Tillmanns improve five spots to a tie for 14th on the individual leaderboard to conclude the George Hannon Collegiate at the par-71, 7,412-yard UT Golf Club in Austin, Texas.
A native of Cologne, Germany, Tillmanns finished with a team-best score of even-par 213 thanks to a 1-under par 70 on Tuesday. Tillmanns, the 70th-ranked player according to Golfstat, tied for 14th, tallying his fourth top-20 finish of the season. Tillmanns finished ahead of five other ranked players in the field, including two in the top 35.
K-State, which entered the final round in a tie for seventh, finished in a tie for ninth at 25-over par 877. The Wildcats finished even with No. 31 Baylor and West Virginia, while they were one stroke back of No. 46 TCU and No. 50 Little Rock.
"Tim was really solid all week," head coach Grant Robbins said. "He had a tough stretch midway through his round today, but I was really proud of how he bounced back, going 3-under on the back nine. As a team, it was a tough day for us. The course played pretty difficult with the greens and the hole locations, but the bottom line is we just didn't play well enough. As a young team, it was a good learning experience. Playing on a difficult course against a field like this can expose your weaknesses, especially if you aren't sharp with every aspect of your game. We will learn from it and get ready for another strong test at Mississippi State."
Junior Will Hopkins tied for 37th at 7-over par 220, which included a 2-over par 73 on Tuesday. Freshman Luke O'Neill finished two strokes behind Hopkins at 9-over par 222 to tie for 47th. Sophomore Riccardo Leo tallied an 11-over par 224, putting him in a tie for 54th, and senior George Clarke carded a 16-over par 229 to tie for 65th.
Tournament host and 12th-ranked Texas claimed first place at its home course, as the Longhorns used 21 birdies during the final round to finish at 17-under par 834 for the tournament. UT was eight strokes ahead of No. 2 Oklahoma and No. 12 Texas Tech. Pierceson Coody of the Longhorns secured first place following his 3-under par 68 final round to give him a 54-hole score of 11-under par 202.
K-State will look to bounce back March 26-28 at the Old Waverly Invitational held at Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Mississippi.
