MANHATTAN, Kan. – Following her first career double-double Saturday in a sweep of Saint Louis, K-State freshman Aliyah Carter was named Big 12 Rookie of the Week, the conference office announced Wednesday.
Carter, playing six rotations for just the second time in her initial season, tallied a career-best 10 digs to go with a match-high 13 kills in the Wildcats' three-set win over the Billikens. Carter recorded all 13 kills in the second and third sets at a .296 efficiency.
A native of Dubuque, Iowa, Carter hit .500 in collecting seven kills in Saturday's second set before closing out SLU in straight sets with six kills on 11 swings (.364). Additionally, she dug six balls in the final set to card the first double-double of her career.
The 5-foot-9 outside hitter also added a pair of blocks to go with an ace against the Billikens.
On the season, Carter's 3.88 kills per set average ranks fourth in the Big 12 and second among league freshmen.
The honor marks Carter's third weekly honor of the season and K-State's seventh weekly league award of the season. During the fall campaign, Abigail Archibong (Defensive), Shelby Martin (Offensive) and Jayden Nembhard (Rookie, twice) were each recognized by the league office.
K-State (11-7, 10-6 Big 12) continues its spring season Saturday, as the Wildcats host No. 24 Creighton (8-2) at Bramlage Coliseum. The match is set for a 6 p.m. start and fans can listen to Rob Voelker on the call at K-StateSports.com/watch.
