Cats in Eighth After First Round of MountainView Collegiate

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Kansas State women's golf team put together a round of 2-over par 290 on Friday - highlighted by a 1-under par effort by freshman Napua Glossner - during the first round of the MountainView Collegiate held at the par-72, 6,350-yard Preserve Course.
"They had great energy and competed hard," head coach Kristi Knight said. "We just had a handful of penalty shots that held us back and a couple of three-puts that slowed us down, but they did a lot of things good."
K-State was the first team off the No. 1 hole on Friday and totaled nine birdies on the front nine, including three-straight by Glossner. The Wildcats then put together 10 birdies on the back but also seven bogeys and a pair of double-bogeys.
"Coach Jared (Helin) and I like what we see," Knight said. "When one of the ladies had a bad hole, we did a good job of bouncing back. We followed a bogey with a birdie multiple times today, so we need to continue that. There's no panic or anything. Obviously, the scores are low, but we left some shots out there. We can only control what we are doing."
Glossner carded six birdies on the day after starting with a double bogey on the first hole. She will start play on Saturday tied for 17th.
"Napua got off to a rocky start, but she immediately reeled off three birdies in a row," Knight said. "She hit a couple potholes, but she's super talented. She has great energy and hits the ball a long way. She is still leaning since this is her first semester of college golf, but she enjoys playing and her teammates love her."
A trio of Wildcats - Haley Vargas, Reid Isaac and Heather Fortushniak - are each tied for 30th at 1-over par 73. Despite five birdies on the day, Niamh McSherry is at 3-over par 75 and tied for 43rd.
Seven teams scored under par during the first round. No. 31 Texas is in the top spot after the first 18 holes of play, finishing at 16-under par 272. The Longhorns, who carded the second-lowest round in tournament history, are followed by No. 20 Houston and No. 36 Iowa State in a tie for second place at 10-under par.
On the individual scoreboard, Texas' Ashleigh Park earned herself the top spot during the first round after carding a bogey-free round of 6-under par 66, tied for the fourth-lowest round in tournament history.
"There are very good teams here," Knight said. "We have multiple top-10 teams. Not a whole lot separates these teams when it comes to ranking. We also have some very good teams here who aren't listed in the top 50, but they are very talented. I think we will continue to see good scores, so it will be fun to watch."
Kansas State will tee off at 9:30 a.m. (MST) Saturday morning off hole No. 10. Fans can follow live scoring at www.golfstat.com throughout the event.
