K-State’s Tillmanns in Top 10 Following Second Round
Mar 27, 2021 | Men's Golf
WEST POINT, Miss. – After consecutive rounds of shooting 2-under par 70, Kansas State sophomore men's golfer Tim Tillmanns is in a tie for ninth place following Saturday's second round of the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship, held at the par-72, 7,088-yard Old Waverly Golf Club.
Tillmanns, the 51st-ranked player in the country according to Golfstat, shot bogey-free during the second round to put his 36-hole total at 4-under par 140. He sits one stroke back of eighth place and two strokes shy of a tie for third.
As a team, K-State shot even-par 288 during round two, but the WIldcats slipped two spots and are in a tie for 10th with No. 24 Alabama at 1-over par 577.
"Tim was really solid again today," head coach Grant Robbins said. "Tee to green, he was probably average by his standards, but he did a great job grinding out pars when he missed the green.
"As a team, it was disappointing the way we finished today," Robbins continued. "We made some big numbers on the back nine that proved to be costly. We just have to keep working on the mental toughness aspect and finish off rounds. We will put today behind us and look to bounce back strong tomorrow."
Junior Will Hopkins tallied 1-under par 71 during the second round to get back to even-par 144 and in a tie for 39th. Freshman Luke O'Neill collected his second-straight day of 1-over par 73, and he sits in a tie for 55th at 2-over par 146. One stroke behind O'Neill is sophomore Riccardo Leo, who's in a tie for 59th at 3-over par 147. Senior George Clarke is in 82nd place at 11-over par 155.
No. 9 Texas A&M moved up three spots on the day to seize control of the leaderboard heading into Sunday, as the Aggies score of 17-under par 559 has them with a one-stroke advantage over No. 13 Georgia. Sam Bennett of Texas A&M leads the individual leaderboard at 9-under par 135, a two-stroke advantage over the field.
Sunday's final round of the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship tees off at 8 a.m. from holes 1 and 10. Live scoring can be followed along at golfstat.com.
