LINCOLN, Neb. – The Kansas State men's golf team used a second-round score of 1-over par 285 to maintain third place following the first two rounds of the Git-R-Done Husker Invitational on Saturday, held at the par-71, 7,025-yard Firethorn Golf Club.
The Wildcats, who were tied for first following a first-round score of 5-over par 289, are sit five strokes behind first-place Michigan State and one stroke behind second-place Minnesota.
Sophomore Tim Tillmanns, who is in a tie for fourth, climbed four spots during the second round, shooting 1-under par 70 during the afternoon to tally 1-under par 141 on the day. The Cologne, Germany native is four strokes back of the leader.
"I thought we played two pretty solid rounds of golf today," head coach Grant Robbins said. "This course is tough, and when you add the cold and wind, it was a grind out there. We made some mistakes, but I thought we did a great job of bouncing back and finished off both rounds pretty well. We are in a good spot going into tomorrow."
Junior Will Hopkins is in a tie for seventh at 1-over par 143, while sophomore Riccardo Leo is one stroke behind at 2-over par 144 and in a tie for 11th. Graduate student Jacob Eklund climbed 11 spots during an even-par 71 round two, and he sits at 6-over par 148 and in a tie for 25th. Freshman Luke O'Neill is one stroke back of Eklund at 7-over par 149 and is tied for 30th.
Senior George Clarke and sophomore Ryan Bender are both competing as individuals. Clarke is in a tie for 13th at 3-over par 145, while Bender carded 12-over par 154 on the day and is in a tie for 47th.
Michigan State currently sits in first place, as the Spartans used a 6-under par 278 second round to climb past the rest of the field. MSU holds a 36-hole score of 1-over par 569 thanks to having the top two individuals, including first-place James Piot at 5-under par 137.
The third and final round of the Git-R-Done Husker Invitational will tee off with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start on Sunday. Live stats can be followed along at golfstat.com.
