THE WOODLANDS, Texas – The Kansas State women's golf team finished the 2021 Big 12 Championship Tournament in a tie for sixth place with 45th-ranked TCU after the final round of play on Tuesday at The Club at Carlton Woods. During the final 18 holes, the Wildcats carded a 2-over par 290 to bring them to a 54-hole score of 9-over par 873.
"I'm really proud of them," head coach Kristi Knight said after three hard-fought rounds. "Nobody wants to play well more than those ladies. It hurts them when they aren't able to put up a good score. I am really proud of the effort today and happy for them. It was an all around good day even if we would maybe like to have another shot at hole 10."
The tie for sixth is the highest finish by the Wildcats since 2009 when they placed fourth. Aside from tying 45th-ranked TCU, K-State also topped No. 37 Iowa State, which finished 11 shots back and in eighth place.
Thanks to a 1-under par 71 score on Tuesday, Irish native Niamh McSherry jumped seven places on the individual scoreboard to finish her last Big 12 Championship in a tie for 22nd place at 3-over par 219. Junior Heather Fortushniak carded another strong performance with an even-par score on Monday. Her birdie on the final hole pulled the team into the tie for sixth and tied her for 15th on the individual leaderboard at 1-under par 215, which matched her career-low tournament score.
"Heather made a 20-foot downhill putt to birdie the last hole," Knight said. "That got us in a tie for sixth when every stroke matters. Yesterday was disappointing, but today the team came out with great energy, purpose and resolve."
Senior Reid Isaac finished her final conference tournament tied for 24th at 4-over par 220 following a 75 over the final 18 holes. Freshman Napua Glossner and sophomore Haley Vargas tied for 35th at 8-over par 224. Glossner shot her best round of the tournament on Tuesday with a 1-over par 73, while Vargas came in with a 74.
"The team teed off determined," Knight said. "It is a crazy game. There is a lot of time between shots where you can second guess and get upset after a poor shot, but that zaps your energy. I thought today the team did a nice job of staying in the moment and giving it everything they have. They focused on the shot in front of them."
Oklahoma State continued to dominate on the team leaderboard due to a final-round score of 7-under par 281. The Cowgirls finished at 34-under par 830 to win the Big 12 Championship by 16 shots. Texas Tech edged Baylor for second place by one stroke as the Red Raiders carded an 18-under par 846.
Texas Tech's Gala Dumez took the individual crown after being in a three-way tie through 36 holes. She finished the championship at 14-under par 202. Maja Stark, ranked No. 7 in the country, finished two strokes back for second place.
The NCAA Division I Women's Golf Committee will announce bids on April 28 live on Golf Channel for the five different regional sites.
