K-State With Work To Do After Day One of Big 12 Championship
Apr 26, 2021 | Men's Golf
HUTCHINSON, Kan. – Battling windy conditions on a tough golf course, the Kansas State men's golf team currently sits in eighth place following the first two rounds of the 2021 Big 12 Championship on Monday, held at the par-70, 7,068-yard Prairie Dunes Country Club.
The Wildcats moved up the leaderboard one spot during the second round after tallying 21-over par 301 in the afternoon, which was an eight-stroke improvement from the opening round of 29-over par 309. The Wildcats enter Tuesday's third round at 50-over par 610 for the championship.
"It was a really tough day today," head coach Grant Robbins said. "Prairie Dunes is an extremely difficult course, and when you add in the 30 mile per hour winds, it is just a mental grind. Our guys fought like crazy and I'm proud of how they kept battling even when things weren't going their way. We have two rounds left, so we just have to keep plugging away and keep fighting for every shot."
Freshman Luke O'Neill, who came into the championship in the fifth slot for the Wildcats, tallied a team-best score of 11-over par 151 on Monday and is in a tie for 23rd. Sophomore Riccardo Leo is one stroke behind O'Neill at 12-over par 152, putting him in a tie for 28th. Leo carded one of only five eagles among the 50 competitors over the two rounds on Monday, which came on hole No. 7 in the afternoon round.
Graduate student Jacob Eklund is in a tie for 36th at 14-over par 154. Sophomore Tim Tillmanns and junior Will Hopkins are tied for 45th at 17-over par 157. Tillmanns bounced back in the afternoon round with a 3-over par 73, the best round by a Wildcat on Monday and an 11-stroke improvement from his first-round score.
No. 1 Oklahoma leads the 2021 Big 12 Championship at 17-over par 577, one stroke ahead of No. 3 Oklahoma State. Oklahoma's Quade Cummins and Oklahoma State's Bo Jin are tied for first individually and are the only two players under par after the first day at 1-under par 139.
K-State will tee off the third round of the 2021 Big 12 Championship at 9:07 a.m. on Tuesday, and live results can be followed at golfstat.com.
