HUTCHINSON, Kan. – The Kansas State men's golf team notched a 2-under par 278 third round - tying for the second-best round of the day - on Tuesday at the 2021 Big 12 Championship, held at the par-70, 7,068-yard Prairie Dunes Country Club.
The Wildcats remain in eighth place heading into Wednesday's final round, as only three teams moved on the leaderboard during the third round. K-State has a nine-stroke advantage on ninth-place West Virginia and are five strokes behind seventh-place Kansas.
"We played really well today," head coach Grant Robbins said. "We didn't finish the way we wanted, but overall it was a very solid round. The conditions and course setup were more favorable for scoring, and I thought we did a good job of staying in the process and staying focused on the next shot. We just have to continue that mindset and go out and keep fighting for every shot tomorrow."
Junior Will Hopkins and sophomore Tim Tillmanns bounced back during the third round, each moving up 12 spots on the leaderboard following rounds of 2-under par 68. The duo is in a tie for 33rd place at 15-over par 225.
Freshman Luke O'Neill carded even-par 70 on the day and continues to pace the Wildcats, sitting in a tie for 20th at 11-over par 221. Graduate student Jacob Eklund is tied for 46th at 18-over par 228 after tallying a 4-over par 74 during the third round.
Three teams ranked in the top 10 in the nation - No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 3 Oklahoma State and No. 7 Texas - are tied for first place entering the final round, 14 strokes ahead of a tie for fourth place. The Longhorns put together the best round of the day at 8-under par 272 to move up from third place.
