MANHATTAN, Kan. – It was a day filled with high and lows for the K-State women's golf team at the Sam Golden Invitational. As a team, the Wildcats shot 3-over par 575, which included a 4-under par 284 in the first round.
"The ladies got off to a great start and played well in round one," head coach Kristi Knight said. "Haley (Vargas) and Heather (Fortunshiak) came up big with rounds of 67 and 69. Birdies were out there all day, but we were not able to capitalize as often in round 2."
Haley Vargas shined in the first 18 holes of the day for Kansas State. The junior had the best round of her career, carding a five-under par 67. This feat put her in a tie for 10th in school history for individual rounds. She enters the final round in a tie for 18th at 3-under par 141.
Senior Heather Fortunshiak found success in the first 18 holes but struggled to stay consistent throughout the afternoon. She currently finds herself tied for 43rd place at 3-over par 147. Her score was buoyed by an impressive 69 in the opening round.
Transfer Manon Donche-Gay carded an even-par 144 in her first action as a Wildcat. The Daytona State Community College transfer had an exceptional score of 70 in round two, which brought her into a tie for 31st place.
Rounding out the scoring lineup for Kansas State was Remington Isaac and Napua Glossner. The freshman Isaac shot 4-over par 148 on the day, while Glossner shot 6-over 150.
The strength of the field at the Sam Golden Invitational was evident on Monday. Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, TCU and Texas A&M made up the top five of the leaderboard, all of which had impressive days. The Cowgirls hold a one-shot lead over the Red Raiders heading into the final round.
"Proud of the effort. They know they can go get a low round tomorrow to finish," Knight said.
The final round of the Sam Golden Invitational is set for an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. Fans can follow live scoring at www.golfstat.com throughout the event.
