Wildcats Continue Fall Slate By Hosting Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational

MANHATTAN, Kan. – "Patience and positivity," that's what head coach Kristi Knight is preaching to her team as they return home to host the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational this Monday and Tuesday.

Colbert Hills Golf Course is the site for the biennial tournament, an event which the  Kansas State women's golf team has won twice in a row (2017 and 2019).

Coming off a 13th-place finish in the season opener at the Sam Golden Invitational, Knight is confident in the team's mentality and ability to bounce back.

"These ladies play their best when they are patient with themselves and have calm, positive demeanors," Knight said.

Haley Vargas, Remington Isaac, Manon Donche-Gay, Napua Glossner and Lilly Whitley are the five in the scoring lineup for the Cats. The Wildcats will also have three players competing as individuals in Heather Fortushniak, Briony Bayles and Gabriela McNelly.

Vargas, a junior, has the chance to build off a great start to her season. She led the Wildcats in Texas with arguably the best performance of her career when she recorded her best individual round (67), best 36-hole score (141) and tied her best 54-hole score (216).

Vargas came away with a tie for 33rd, which speaks to how tough the other competitors were at the Sam Golden. Vargas will look to have a similar performance this week at Colbert Hills and hopefully land high on the leaderboard.

Isaac was another bright spot for Kansas State as the freshman opened her season by carding a 1-over par 217, good for a tie for 37th place. Isaac had an impressive round three to boost her score, finishing 3-under par 69 in the final 18. That might be a sign of more to come for Isaac as she is just getting her career underway.

There will be nine teams competing at the par-72, 6,221-yard course. Kansas State will go up against Arkansas State, Incarnate Word, Kansas, Nebraska, Sam Houston State, Toledo, Tulane and Wichita State. It's a strong field that will present some challenges to the Wildcats' quest for a three-peat at the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational.

"The team and players with the best mentality will be on top of the leaderboard come Tuesday," Knight said.

The event begins on Monday with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start for 36 holes of continuous golf, while the final round will be held on Tuesday with a shotgun start at 8:00 a.m. The event is free and open to the public, and live scoring can be found at golfstat.com.
