MANHATTAN, Kan. – True freshman Remington Isaac paced the Kansas State women's golf team throughout day one at the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational on Monday as the Cats put together two solid rounds to finish the day in second at their home course, Colbert Hills.
K-State carded 2-over par 290 on the first 18 and 12-over par 300 in a windy round two, bringing its day-one score to 14-over par 590.
"I'm proud of the effort today, head coach Kristi Knight said. "We saw a lot of good golf, but we had a few errors that cost us shots. The course played very differently in rounds one and two. It requires great focus and taking care of the little things."
Isaac set the tone for her day with a dominant first round, rising to the top of the player standings. She shot 4-under par 68 through the first 18, which is the best round of her young career and is tied for the best round of any competitor today.
The Montgomery, Texas, product wasn't able to match that impressive mark in round two, but she put together a respectable 2-over par 74 to be alone in second place at 2-under par 142.
Manon Donche-Gay was another Wildat who had a nice day. The community-college transfer is tied for 14th place after carding 5-over 149. She is within striking distance of her first 10 finish if she can put together a positive round three.
Lilly Whitley has performed well so far in her K-State debut. The freshman from Edmond, Oklahoma finds herself in the top 25 at 22nd place after shooting 7-over par 151.
Sophomore Napua Glossner and junior Haley Vargas were the other Wildcats in the scoring lineup. Glossner shot 8-over 152 and is in a tie for 23rd.
Vargas recorded a 36-hole tally of 9-over 153 to land in a tie for 31st. Vargas, who had a team-best finish last week at the Sam Golden Invitational, will hope to get back to her low-scoring ways when play resumes on Tuesday.
Gabriella McNelly, who competed today as an individual, is currently in a tie for 18th. She shot a 6-over par 150 on day one with her score buoyed by an even-par 72 in the first round.
The other individuals for K-State were seniors Briony Bayles and Heather Fortushniak, both of whom are tied for 23rd place at 8-over 152.
The Wildcats have some ground to make up in the final round on Tuesday as they are nine strokes back from the leader - the Nebraska B-team - who stunned everybody with their performance today. The Cornhuskers brought two teams to compete but the B squad, made up of just four players, stole the show Monday at Colbert Hills with a 5-over par 581 performance.
Knight knows that the victory is not out of reach yet.
"Time to get some rest and show up ready to play tomorrow," Knight said.
