WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The K-State men's golf team has four players - Cooper Schultz, Luke O'Neill, Will Hopkins and Tim Tillmanns - in the top-30 through two rounds at the Old Town Club Collegiate Invitational on Monday as the Cats are comfortably in the top half of the leaderboard.
The Wildcats used an excellent 10-under par 270 in round two to pair with an even-par 280 round one to be in seventh place after the first day at the par-70, 6,966-yard Old Town Club. K-State's overall score of 10-under par 550 is just six shots out of the top-five heading into the final round on Tuesday morning.
"I thought we played pretty well today," head coach Grant Robbins said. "The greens were much faster today than they were in the practice round and it took us several holes to get adjusted. We were all pretty solid off the tee all day, which helped set up several birdie looks."
Schultz, a redshirt freshman, is leading the charge for K-State in his scoring lineup debut. Schultz is tied for eighth place as he shot a 5-under par 65 in the second 18, bringing his day-one total to 5-under par 135. He will look to go even higher on a neck-and-neck 78-man leaderboard with a strong final 18 holes.
O'Neill, a sophomore, and Hopkins, a senior, are tied in 23rd place at 2-under par 138.
O'Neill, who tied for fourth at the Wildcat Invitational, picked right up with where he left off two weeks ago and had a stellar 2-under par 68 round two on Monday afternoon, the lowest gross score round of his career.
Hopkins' day was very encouraging as the senior leader needed a bounce-back performance. He was consistent throughout the day and carded two 1-under par 69 rounds.
Tillmanns, a junior, shot a 1-under par 139 and followed the theme of successful second rounds with a 2-under par 68 afternoon to put him in a tie for 29th place.
Miller will have some work to do in round three as the Round Rock, Texas, product is tied for 69th with a score of 6-over par 146.
Wake Forest, the host of the Old Town Club Collegiate Invitational, is the leader in the clubhouse heading into the final round on Tuesday. The Demon Decans are at 28-under par 532 and have a secure eight-stroke lead over second-place Duke. Alex Fitzpatrick and Michael Brennan lead the Demon Deacons and are tied in first place - along with Brice Wilkinson of Southern Miss - at 9-under par 131.
Play at the Old Town Club will conclude Tuesday morning with the Wildcats set to tee off hole No. 10 beginning at 8:50 a.m. (ET).
For Coach Robbins and the Wildcats, there is a lot of opportunity in the final 18 holes.
"I like where everyone's game is at right now," Robbins said. "We just have to stick to our game plan, keep giving ourselves opportunities and see what happens tomorrow."
