Jan 10, 2022 | Football
MANHATTAN, Kan. – A former Kansas State quarterback who was an integral part of turning around the Wildcat football program in the early 1990s while also serving as an assistant coach during the best years in program history, Matt Miller passed away at the age of 49 on Saturday.
A two-year letterwinner at quarterback in 1994 and 1995, Miller finished his career ranking first in school history in completion percentage (currently ranked third), while his 152.6 passing efficiency was also a school record (currently second). He threw for 22 touchdown passes and held a 157.3 passing efficiency in 1995, which were both school records at the time. He was named an All-American and was a finalist for the Davey O'Brien Award during his senior season.
As a coach, Miller was on staff for 10 seasons, first as a student assistant (1996) and graduate assistant (1997-98) before tutoring the Wildcat tight ends from 1999 to 2005. As a graduate assistant, he worked closely with the quarterbacks as he helped develop Brian Kavanagh and Michael Bishop, both of whom earned All-Big 12 honors and the latter who was the Heisman Trophy runner up in 1998. While working with the tight ends, Miller mentored Brian Casey, a three-time All-Big 12 performer, and Thomas Hill, who earned a pair of All-Big 12 citations. Miller went on to become the head football coach at Garden City Community College in 2013 and 2014.
Miller began his collegiate career at Texas A&M before transferring to K-State in 1993. He was a two-sport athlete for the Wildcats as he also hit .318 and earned Second Team All-Big Eight honors in 1994 for the K-State baseball team. He earned his bachelor's degree from Kansas State in 1996.
K-State Sports Extra writing specialist D. Scott Fritchen will have a more in-depth look at the life of Miller on Tuesday.
