Dec 22, 2022 | Volleyball
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Mackenzie Morris continues to rack up honors as the junior was named the 2022 Big 12 Volleyball Scholar-Athlete of the Year in an announcement by the league office on Thursday.
A product of Dallas, Texas, Morris is the second player in program history to earn the distinction. Fellow libero Kersten Kober was the first to receive the honor in 2015.
Morris adds the Big 12 Volleyball Scholar-Athlete of the Year honor to several other merits this season. She was named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team for the third time in her career. She also secured her third Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honor and a spot on the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team.
The libero is an accounting major with a 4.0 grade-point average and a four-time Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll recipient.
Morris played in all 29 matches on the court and was one of three players to see time in all 110 sets this season. She led the Wildcats with 500 digs on the season while her average of 4.55 per set finished second in the conference. Morris finished with a career-best 73 assists.
She collected double-digit digs in 25 of 29 matches. The libero added 21 total aces, collecting a season-best three aces on two separate occasions. This was versus North Florida (Sept. 2) and Loyola Chicago (Sept. 9).
The junior reached career dig No. 1,000 in her 63rd match in a Wildcat uniform, becoming the fastest player in program history to reach the milestone in the rally-scoring era. She is also just the fifth Wildcat to hit the 1,000-career dig mark.
Morris tied the season-high single-match dig total for the Big 12 and earned a career-high mark with 36 digs in the Cats' five-set victory against Texas Tech on November 23, which led to her player of the week accolade. The tally was the most in a single match for K-State since 2019 and Morris was just the fifth Wildcat in program history to record 36 digs or more in a single match.
The Wildcats finished the 2022 season 15-14 and 6-10 in Big 12 play. The team is set to open the 49th season at K-State in the new Morgan Family Arena in August of 2023.
