K-State Bounces Back with Sweep of FAU
Feb 12, 2022 | Tennis
MANHATTAN, Kan. – After a tough loss against Memphis on Friday, the Kansas State women's tennis team rebounded with a 4-0 sweep of Florida Atlantic Saturday (February 12) at Body First Indoor Tennis Center.
"We knew that our attitude wasn't good yesterday and our approach, being a little assertive, was not good in doubles and we just let everything come to us," stated head coach Jordan Smith. "We did a lot better, even with the quick turnaround. FAU is good, they played yesterday as well, so we didn't know what to expect."
K-State quickly clinched the doubles point after a 6-2 victory by freshman Dinara Alloyarova and senior Anna Turco against FAU's Greta Schieroni and Lexi Silna on Court 3.
Also earning a doubles victory was the senior duo of Karine-Marion Job and Maria Linares, as the pair took down Amber McGinnis and Millie-Mae Matthews 6-2 at the second spot. Both doubles tandems improved their spring records to 3-1.
Due to the Wildcats claiming the doubles point, the No. 1 doubles matchup between K-State's Florentine Dekkers and Ioana Gheorghita and FAU's Martina Kudelova and Katerina Filip went unfinished (4-3).
In singles action, the Cats claimed three straight-set victories in clinching the first-ever matchup between K-State and FAU.
Earning the first singles point for K-State was Dekkers in the No. 4 position. The freshman claimed a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Schieroni, pushing her spring record to 4-1.
Finishing next for the Wildcats was Gheorghita, earning a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Matthews on Court 6.
Ranked 68th in the nation in the latest ITA women's singles poll, Job defeated Kudelova in two sets, 6-3, 6-3. The Lyon, France native kept her unblemished singles mark intact, improving to 4-0 at the Wildcats' top position in the lineup.
"I give her credit.," said Smith. "She has really established in herself that she can maintain her calm, winning or losing. She has had a better balance. She's always been a great player and she is going to keep getting better."
K-State moves to a record of 4-1 for the 2022 season while FAU drops to 3-6.
The Wildcats will hit the road for the first time this season as they take on the Arizona State Sun Devils in Tempe, Arizona on Saturday (February 19) at 1 p.m. at the Whiteman Tennis Center.
