Arizona State Doubles Up K-State, 4-2

Feb 20, 2022 | Tennis

TEMPE, Ariz. – The Kansas State women's tennis team took the lead early with the doubles point, but couldn't maintain the momentum and dropped a 4-2 decision to Arizona State on Sunday (February 20) at the Whiteman Tennis Center.

"It ultimately comes down to not having a complete team effort in our singles matches," stated head coach Jordan Smith. "Half did excellent, and the other half need to step up. Once we learn to get out of our own way, then we will do some great things. Obviously there has to be credit give to the Arizona State team and their coaches. They found a way to come back and win."

Clinching the doubles point for K-State was the doubles duo of freshman Dinara Alloyarova and senior Anna Turco. The pair defeated Natasha Hill and Cali Jankowski from Arizona State, 7-5.

Earning the first doubles win for the Wildcats were seniors Karine-Marion Job and Maria Linares after taking down Sedona Gallagher and Giulia Morlet, 6-1.

The Sun Devils' Patricija Spaka and Domenika Turkovic were too much for freshman Florentine Dekkers and senior Ioana Gheorghita as they won 6-1.

Gheorghita came back in the singles match and overcame Hill in two sets, 6-3, 6-0, at the No. 6 spot.

In the singles match against No. 68 Job and Morlet from Arizona State, it was Morlet who came out on top. Job was toppled in two sets, 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 1 position.

Alloyarova tried to hold on, but was unsuccessful against Spaka, 6-2, 6-1, at the No. 5 spot.

Coming out with the win was Arizona State's Jankowski against K-State's Dekkers, 6-4, 6-1, at the No. 4 position.

It was a close fought battle for Linares, but ultimately the Venezuela native was overpowered by Turkovic in three sets, 4-6, 7-6, 6-3, at the No. 2 spot.

Senior Rosanna Maffei was leading her singles match against Sedona Gallagher 1-6, 7-5, 5-4, but the Sun Devils already clinched the match before being able to finish at the No. 3 position.

The Wildcats will remain on the road and travel to Seattle, Washington to play Washington on Friday (February 25). The match will begin at 2 p.m. CT.
