Feb 14, 2022 | Men's Golf
MOBILE, Ala. – Led by junior Tim Tillmanns, the Kansas State men's golf team got off to a strong start at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate, as the Wildcats are in third place after action on Monday at the par-72, 7,212-yard Magnolia Grove Crossings Golf Course.
Despite the plan to play 36 holes on Monday, play was suspended with five holes remaining in the second round and will be completed on Tuesday morning.
The Wildcats carded an impressive 3-under par 285 in the first round to rise into second place after 18 holes. K-State is currently putting together an even-par round two, which, for the time being, pushes the Cats to third place. K-State is one stroke behind No. 20 Illinois for second place and 10 strokes off the leader in No. 49 UAB.
"Overall I thought we played pretty well," head coach Grant Robbins said. "Will (Hopkins) and Tim were pretty consistent all day and everyone has contributed."
Tillmanns paced the Cats out of the No. 1 spot in the scoring lineup and is in a tie for fifth place at 4-under par. The Cologne, Germany product scored a 2-under par 70 opening round and is replicating that score so far in his second 18.
Following Tillmanns on the leaderboard is fellow veteran Will Hopkins, who is tied for 17th place at 1-under par. The senior was consistent all day, carding a 1-under par 71 first round and is at even par through 14 holes in round two.
Nicklaus Mason is in a tie for 23rd place at an even par. The freshman carded a 1-over par 73 first round but rose up to leaderboard thanks to his work so far in round two at 1-under par.
Laurenz Schiergen, who is making his collegiate debut, is currently at 4-over par in round two, but is tied for 42nd place at 3-over par after scoring a 1-under par 71 in the opening round. Luke O'Neill, a sophomore, is close behind in a tie for 45th place. He carded a 1-over par 73 first round and is 3-over par through 14 holes in the second round.
Also competing as an individual, Cooper Schultz shined in the opening round. The redshirt freshman carded an impressive 3-under par 69 in the first 18 to rise into second place. So far in the second round, Schultz is 3-over par, which has dropped him to 23rd on the leaderboard.
"We were really good tee to green, and if we can get a few more putts to fall, we will be right there," Robbins said. "We just need to go finish round two strong and keep it going in round three."
Adrien Dumont De Chassart, a junior from Illinois, and Khavish Varadan, a sophomore from UAB, both lead the field in a tie for first place. The two golfers, who are both ranked in the top 40 nationally, are at 6-under par.
Kansas State will have a chance to claim a high finish when second-round play resumes Tuesday morning at 8 a.m., followed by the final round. Fans can follow live scoring of the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate at Golfstat.com.
